MAY 2021

Kia Ora!
CHECK US OUT!
WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
WELCOME CALLUM!
We are delighted to welcome Callum Fowler to our clinical team!  Callum is tangata whenua- born and raised in Southland, of Ngai Tahu descent.  His runanga is Oraka Aparima.  Callum left Southland in search of adventures, trained as a doctor, lived overseas for a while and finally returned with a wife.  He has 2 dogs, and 2 kids.  Callum loves all things theatre (you may have seen him recently in 'Blackadder; The Golden Age' and you will be seeing him in the upcoming IMT production of 'Les Miserables').  He sings, plays guitar, laughs a lot, and loves skiing and dog sledding.  He is passionate about equitable health care for young people and has already brought lots of light and laughter to Number 10!
WELCOME MELANIE!
We have also recently welcomed Melanie to the team in our newly created Social Services Manager role- overseeing the Transitions Team.  Melanie moved to Invercargill in 2009 from Dunedin to live with her partner.  Between them they have seven children ranging between 26 years old and 10 years old.  Since moving to Invercargill, Melanie has spent most of her time either caring for their blended family, studying, working with whanau, rangatahi and tamariki in the social service field and volunteering with Scouts Aotearoa.  Melanie enjoys music, reading scifi and fantasy fiction, hanging with the family, and is a self-confessed gamer. It's great to have her on board!
COLOUR YOUR DAY
On the 5th of March the Number 10 team dressed as brightly as possible and raised some money for Colour Your Day, a New Zealand initiative to tackle the Tall Poppy Syndrome and culture of criticism.
'WHAT ABOUT ME?' SURVEY 2021
'What about me?' is the NZ national youth health and well-being survey. Young people at Youth One Stop Shops throughout the country are taking part and will collect information to tell the Government, other agencies, and researchers what it's like to be a young person in Aotearoa.

Over the coming months some of Southland's young people aged from 13 to18 will take part in the survey. They will be asked many questions such as how they feel about life. They will answer some question on types of risky behaviours that they may experience now or in the past such as addictions, abuse, self-harm or had thoughts about suicide. Young people are supported through this process with the help of Number 10 Youth Mentors and Coaches.
Young people will have the opportunity to tell us, and the Government the one thing they think would help to have a good life now and in the future. We are excited to have a part in this high-quality research.

The Creative Arts team finished off the term by painting a hoarding panel to go up around the CBD rebuild.

THANK YOU
RANGATAHI SPORTS TOURNAMENT
We are just over a week away from Number 10's Annual Youth Week celebration, Rangatahi Sports Tournament! This year we have 9 teams from 7 Alternative Education Organisations- 2 are coming all the way from Dunedin!   ILT Stadium Southland are major sponsors- providing the venue and bits and pieces for the day free of charge, which we appreciate massively!
We are also hugely grateful to the businesses who are helping us out by donating prizes- we recognise that for many it has been a tough 12 months, but we have been blown away by the willingness of businesses to get on board and make the Tournament a success!  Aside from awarding trophies and prizes to the first team in each sporting category, spot prizes are awarded for teamwork, fair play and sportsmanship as well as an overall team prize for Fairplay.  We genuinely couldn't do it without this support, so a HUGE thank you!
COMMUNITY TRUST SOUTH
We are especially thankful for the support that Community Trust South provide to Number 10 projects. Community Trust Southland have awarded us $70,000 in operational funding for the 2021 year. This allows us to continue working within the community to provide much needed resources that support young people who struggle with issues such as mental health. The funds enable us to continue in our broad mission to ensure healthy, resilient youth for Southland. We are extremely grateful for their support.
