ON THE ROAD TO ZERO WASTE

Republic Services, operator of the Roosevelt Regional Landfill in south central Washington State, receives residual (non recyclable, non compostable) municipal waste from BC communities and industrial generators via its waste-by-rail system. Rail is the most environmentally sound and least expensive means of transportation that generates the least emissions than any other mode.

Utilizing Republic allows municipalities, and regional districts to maximize their recycling and diversion programs by not having to commit financially to building new infrastructure.

Customer’s Zero Waste programs can mature and become more successful when not having to “feed” a new disposal facility to make it financially viable when residual waste volumes are declining due to their successful Zero Waste programs.

PINCH POINT

How Republic Services Helped Remote Coastal First Nations in British Columbia Solve their Waste Disposal Challenge

By the mid-2000s, remote First Nations in northern British Columbia situated along narrow coast lines, had run out of local landfill space and could only open burn. The communities started recycling and composting systems, but regional landfill options for residual waste was scarce. The option to back-haul trailers on the fuel barge to Vancouver and then onwards by rail to Republic Services Landfill in Washington State solved a pressing problem for Heiltsuk (Bella Bella), Kitasoo (Klemtu), Gitga’at (Hartley Bay) and Gitxaala (Kitkatla). In the words of Leo Lawson (Heiltsuk Tribal Council), Republic Services “provided us service when we desperately needed it”, a sentiment echoed with gratitude by all 4 communities.

Canada Pledges Emission Reductions at US Hosted Earth Day Climate Summit

On April 22, 2021 US President Joe Biden opened the Earth Day Climate Summit of 40 world leaders who virtually came to pledge cuts to their countries’ greenhouse gas emissions. With new targets from Canada, the United States, Japan, and existing targets from the EU and Britain, more than half the world's economy are now committed to a 1.5 degrees Celsius goal.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau pledged that Canada would reduce its greenhouse gas emissions 40 percent to 45 percent from 2005 levels by 2030, a step up from its previous target of a 30 percent reduction in the same time frame but one that falls short of the minimum 50 - 60 per cent reduction climate groups and opposition parties said is needed to limit global warming to 1.5 C degrees.

Canada’s latest budget also fall short on climate actions and contains no road map to reduce our country’s carbon emissions.

AR/VR Simulations for Sustainable, Regenerative, Circular Cities

With 191 country signatories to the Paris Climate Agreement now hard at work in the race to zero carbon by 2050, much of the heavy lifting in ecosystem sustainability falls on the shoulders of the world's densely populated urban centers. This conversation considers how today's AI-enabled simulation media, such as AR/VR, can be effectively applied to accelerate learning, understanding, training, and solutions-modeling to sustainability planning and design.

In this session, participants will see how science data from such sources as NASA and NOAA, combined with local data inputs, can be used to both exponentially improve and accelerate net-zero carbon, climate positive and regenerative outcomes.
