Dear Neighbors,

My favorite way to meet constituents is outside, on a sunny day, while we enjoy our neighborhoods at their absolute best. That is why I am so excited to announce that Farmers Market season is upon us, and once again I will be in regular attendance at our District 7 community markets to be available for constituent conversations.

The first farmers market I plan to attend is the Queen Anne Farmers Market, from about 4:15 p.m. until close on Thursday, June 3rd. If you don't live in Queen Anne, don’t worry, I plan to attend many other farmers markets as well and will announce my upcoming visits in this newsletter. If you cannot make it out to a farmers market you can always sign up for a telephone appointment at this link

Sprinting Toward Public Safety

I am pleased to announce my office is participating in the What Works Cities (WWC) and White Bird Clinic eight week collaborative online learning opportunity led by practitioners of the Crisis Assistance Helping Out on the Streets (CAHOOTS) program on improving response models to behavioral health, addiction, poverty, and homelessness related public safety calls. This latest WWC City Solutions Sprint titled - Compassionate Emergency Response: Exploring Innovative Local Approaches to Public Safety - brings together a cohort of 14 cities and national stakeholders committed to advancing toward mobile crisis programs in their communities.

My office has participated each week and with two session left, we are learning from peer cities that have implemented alternate emergency response models, sharing our own experiences of crisis response in Seattle, and engaging with experts in the field. I am excited about this learning opportunity to help inform the next steps to expand public safety options and right size a community based first response system to include a CAHOOTS style program in Seattle. More to come!

JustCARE Comes to Committee

Regular readers of my newsletters are familiar with the JustCARE  program that has been our most effective response to homelessness to date. This program, a collaboration between outreach-focused service providers, gets folks off the street and into hotels, where they receive intensive case management that successfully puts them on the path to permanent stable housing.

Currently, JustCARE has almost exclusively operated in Pioneer Square and the China Town International District. I am working with my colleagues on the City Council and at the County to find additional funding to expand the program so it can operate across Seattle. I am also inviting JustCARE to present at the next meeting of the Select Committee on Homelessness Strategies & Investments, which will take place at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 26th. I invite you to watch that virtual meeting if you would like to learn more about the program. All Council committee meetings are televised live on The Seattle Channel.

As always, I am happy to take phone calls from constituents who want to discuss issues facing the city and more specifically District 7. Schedule a call with me here.
