Spring Appeal For Literacy Support at Abernethy

Please ensure Abernethy has our Reading Specialist next year!

Did you know that our incredible Reading Specialist, Julie Miller, is funded through community contributions?  This position has not been funded through the district since 2016, but Abernethy fundraising has kept Julie and her invaluable level of instruction in our school.

Our Spring Appeal is the final push in this year's fundraising and will ensure Julie is on board next year to help our struggling readers.

Please give to the
Spring Appeal!

- 20% of our student kindergarten through second grade are being served by our Reading Specialist, Julie Miller
- 100% of these students are considered “At Risk of Failing”
- 90% of these students are considered “Most Vulnerable”

Note:  “Most Vulnerable” is a classification used to describe students who are vulnerable due to income, race, second language supports or potential disability.

The strong partnership that has been built between our teachers and Julie Miller has ensured that our vulnerable students receive the reading intervention required to close the gap.  If we aren’t able to fund this position, our most vulnerable students are at high risk of not receiving as much of the critical reading intervention as they are now.  When children do not have a strong foundation in reading, they can be left behind.  It is particularly important in the year following the pandemic.  Let’s work together to ensure our vulnerable students have the literacy support they need to succeed at Abernethy and beyond.

Finally, if you are interested in joining the PTA Advocacy Committee to help advocate for education funding and support, please reach out to
PTAadvocacy@supportabernethy.org.

Thank you Abernethy!

5th Grade Promotion!!!

Hello 5th Grade Families,

First we would like to say how thankful we are to work with your students and families and how proud we are of all that they have accomplished despite the challenges of the past year. Your students are resilient, hard workers, caring, and have engaged well each day in Comprehensive Distance Learning to Limited In Person Instruction and now in a Hybrid model. Even though we are unable to celebrate their achievements in our favored traditional ways, we still want to make their transition to middle school meaningful and special in the best way possible.

We would like to invite you to a 5th grade Promotion Ceremony to celebrate your students completion of the 5th grade at Abernethy and to recognize this important milestone as each student completes their elementary experience.

Information about the Class Cohort Ceremonies
Ceremonies will be hosted in class cohorts and will be roughly 25 minutes long. Class cohorts allow for students who are currently both in person learning and online learning to participate in a single event as a small class cohort and to avoid hosting online ceremonies. We value the importance of their class communities and a chance to honor each student in person. We are not able to mix grade levels or cohorts of students in the hallways at the time of planning which is why we are unable to have our traditional “Clap Out” unfortunately.

Dates and times for your student’s class cohort are listed below. We will hold the ceremonies outside under the covered area. Students will be seated in chairs with their classroom teacher hosting the time of recognition / celebration as planned by the 5th grade team. There will be limited seating for adults who need it around the perimeter of the covered area so please plan to stand which will help with taking photos as well.

Safety Guidelines for Event
We are asking that only immediate family members attend the ceremony. Thank you for wearing face masks as they are required and continuing to practice social distancing.  All those in attendance will need to sign in and out of the event. At the time of planning, we have to keep each gathering to less than 100 per event. We will have an office table set up under the gazebo for the sign in/out and to provide masks and sanitizer as required by ODE protocols and the Governor's Ready School, Safe Learners Guidelines. Our school events are being monitored by the PPS Health and Safety Team following the School Event Safety Plan application process.

Middle School Redesign Focus Group

Do you want to have an impact on the middle school redesign process?

Join the Middle School Redesign Focus Group!

Portland Public Schools is redesigning the middle grades experience for our students. We don’t know what the redesign will look like because we haven’t heard from our students or caretakers on their hopes, dreams, and needs for middle school. It is important that we hear and learn from as many people as possible to help inform the redesign process.

5th-8th grade Student Focus Group

If your 5th-grade student wants to participate in a focus group, please click on the link found below. The student focus groups will take place next week on Wednesday, May 19th.

If your student isn’t comfortable attending a focus group, a survey will be shared within the coming week.

5th-8th grade Caretaker Focus Group

There will be two opportunities for caretakers to provide feedback on PPS’s middle school redesign. May 25th from 6:30-7:30 pm and May 26th at @10:00 am. Participating in this focus group will be an excellent opportunity to rethink our middle grades experience for your students.

We deeply value your feedback and look forward to learning from your experience.

I look forward to partnering with you.

CDC's New Guidance Will Not Impact Schools this School Year

Today the CDC released new guidance related to fully vaccinated individuals and the use of face coverings and physical distancing.

This afternoon Governor Brown issued a video statement on how this new guidance will be implemented in Oregon. In her statement she shared, "Nothing is changing for schools this school year, and I expect education staff and students to continue to wear masks and physically distance, as outlined in our Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance." This also applies to all other individuals on school campus, including but not limited to: family members, volunteers, visitors, SROs, and other  partners.

ODE is currently working with OHA on guidance for next school year. We will begin to share a discussion draft including key changes for your input the week of May 24th. We will also notify you of any updates to RSSL guidance for summer school in the coming weeks.

Oregon's Graduation Ceremony Guidance aligns to the OHA's guidance for indoor and outdoor entertainment establishments. Please refer to that guidance and other guidance from OHA for any changes in the coming days that may reflect the Governor's announcement today.

K-5 Unit 5 Growth and Development/Violence Prevention

Between May 17th through June 4th, K-5 educators will be teaching Health Unit 5 on Growth and Development and Violence Prevention (GD/VP). These lessons are critical for ensuring the health and well-being of all PPS students.

Unit 5 lessons will be taught face to face for hybrid students and synchronously for students in CDL**, as advised by Senior Leadership.  Health Unit #5 lessons range from 30-45 minutes in length and are designed to be taught every day for 2 weeks.  The lessons can be delivered any time during hybrid face to face time/synchronous CDL time and will take the place of literacy and/or math lessons during those days.  Asynchronous literacy and math lessons will be posted on Atlas to accommodate this shift.

If you do not want your student to participate in the lesson, please do not have them attend the lesson. More details can be found on the letters linked below.
