Dear Watershed Neighbor,

We hope you're doing well. We have a few upcoming opportunities for you to join us: a presentation on a GIS project we've been working on the past few months, and a Science Talk with the Portland Urban Coyote Project! We also had a great volunteer event a few weeks ago, planting at the Boones Ferry culvert project.

Each spring we work with GIS students at PCC Sylvania; this spring we have been working with two students on two projects: one for a community walkshed analysis to learn where folks do and don't have ready access to nature in and near our watershed, and the other to develop a riparian restoration prioritization system to see which parts of our watershed may be facing higher erodibility and could be prioritized in future projects.
At our Monday meeting, student Will Butler will be presenting the site analysis, and as always, you're welcome to join us! Just email Alexis to request the Zoom link. We can also share the recording of the walkshed analysis presentation upon request.
If you can't make it but are curious about maps of the watershed, our interactive web map has a lot of neat data on it; this was last spring's GIS student project, which is being updated regularly.

We're excited to bring to you our spring/summer Science Talk, with the Portland Urban Coyote Project (PUCP)! Join us during lunchtime on Tuesday the 15th with PUCP Project Director Zuriel van Belle. Click here to RSVP, and/or scroll below for more details.

When the Boones Ferry culvert project began, we knew it would be a great chance to bring community members together on-site. A few weeks ago, we were able to hold a planting event with Friends of Tryon Creek, supported by Oregon State Parks and Bureau of Environmental Services. With 11 volunteers, we installed 360 plants! More details and photos are below.

Unsurprisingly, things are busy behind the scenes! With the end of many project years approaching, we're working on gathering photopoints, metrics, and reports, as well as a few grant applications in the works. Otherwise, our restoration projects are moving forward - it's been a rough spring for new plantings since it's been so dry, so today's rain was welcomed.

Stay safe and well,

Alexis Barton, Council Coordinator & Terri Preeg Riggsby, Executive Director

TCWC Monthly Meeting Agenda

Email alexis@tryoncreek.org to request Zoom information - as always, our meetings are open to the public! The first half of our agenda will be the PCC GIS project presentation, and folks can log out or remain for the remainder of the meeting.

Agenda Items:
Introductions
GIS Presentation (Wrap by 6:45)
Business (meeting minutes, financials)
Partner Updates
Land Use Committee Discussion
Staff Report
Equity Discussion
These maps may pique your interest in case you'd like to tune in Monday night's presentation! (Of course, the fact that the analysis will be useful to the Council is highly important, but we wanted to also show how neat some of the imagery & datasets from the process and project are!)

Portland Urban Coyote Project Science Talk

We are looking forward to welcoming Zuriel van Belle of the Portland Urban Coyote Project to share about coyotes and her research with us. This talk will be from 12-1pm including Q&A’s. We may extend Q&A's til 1:30, as we want to let people get back to their day if needed, and provide space for more conversation for folks who can stay longer if interested.

Please do RSVP here. We will follow up with Zoom information.

As this talk isn't specific to the Tryon Creek watershed specifically, and PUCP's research is regional, we hope that this can draw folks from beyond the Tryon Creek watershed, so please feel free to share broadly!
Thanks to the Community Watershed Stewardship Program for funding our Science Talks.

Planting at Boones Ferry Culvert project

We were so glad to be able to support this project that is providing so many benefits for the watersheds' wildlife and community members.

One of our work areas, shown in the first set of photos, was along the opposite side of the trail from Arnold Creek; a wetland-type area with some ducks, where we installed about 150 natives in 1-gallon pots - salmonberry and many other beauties including Western columbine, Hooker's fairy bells, Trillium, and more!

The second work area, shown below, was along the pathway on the downstream side of the bridge, where about 200 hardy natives (fringecup, geum, and sword ferns) were installed along the rocky soils - our volunteers worked hard!

Thanks to the Bureau of Environmental Services for planning support and plants, Oregon State Parks for plants logistics coordination, Friends of Tryon Creek for co-leading, Bosky Dell and Sevenoaks Nursery for growing beautiful plants, and to awesome volunteers!
