Makuru
Makuru is the coldest and wettest time of the year. As the waterways started to fill, Noongar people were able to move about their country and larger animals like kangaroos, emus and possums were hunted for food. Makuru is also a time for animals to pair up for breeding.* Fire was transported by carrying smouldering banksia cones under bookas (kangaroo skin cloaks).
Learn more about Beelo country with Noongar elders, Marie Taylor and Robyn Collard by viewing some meaningful videos filmed at CREEC.

Some Native Bees Nest Underground
Not all native bees use hotels. Some, like Homalictus dotatus (no common name), build their nest underground. These bees live communally, with each female in the colony building and provisioning her own brood cells, but all using the same tunnel system and single entrance hole. The entrance is small and can be blocked by a single bee, thus protecting the whole colony (which can contain hundreds of individuals) from intruders. Parasitoid wasps can evade the guard; but that's a story for another time. Watch a video of some bees at a nest built between paving bricks in suburban Perth. Story and photo by S Mawson.
