Sheffield student Harriet Yates, Global Winner 2020

"Having been awarded the highest possible prize - and informed that I am the first female winner for philosophy in recent years, and Sheffield's first ever global winner for any category - I am immensely proud of myself, particularly given the all challenges that 2020 presented!  It feels incredible to have my ideas recognised internationally by experts, and will definitely open more doors for me after completing my masters in Cognitive Studies at Sheffield.

The November summit was held via Zoom this year for obvious reasons, but I still really enjoyed presenting and sharing ideas with other students and academics, and having my work published!"

FUN STUFF

The Best Veggie/Vegan Eateries in Sheffield!

Hello! My name’s Sophie and I recently started back at 301 Academic Skills Centre as an intern, having worked here during my MA degree in 2017/18. Since becoming a veggie in late 2019, I’ve tried to step up my food-related game by trying out some of the best eateries in Sheffield for veggie or plant-based diets. Sheffield is home to some of the most amazing veggie/vegan restaurants (including places who generally cater for veg-heads really well!). Because most restaurants will have reopened following 17th May, I have come up with a list of my favourite places that my friends and I like to eat as vegetarians and vegans. It was so hard to narrow this list down!

Church – Temple of Fun

(4a Rutland Way, Neepsend)

Possibly one of the coolest places in Sheffield, Church – Temple of Fun is one of Oli Sykes’ (frontman of Bring Me The Horizon) ventures. It is based in the listed Osborn Works, located on the bank of the River Don, and was the only industrial building that the famous architect William John Hale designed (he was well known for his iconic churches). Onto the food – the restaurant is 100% vegan, serving up amazing junk food such as burgers, loaded fries, gyros, and delicious sides such as mac and cheese balls, popcorn cauli bites and fried pickles. If you’re anything like me, you’ll crave coming back here to eat almost every day!

Make No Bones

(Based in The Old Workshop, 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend)

Once based in Church – Temple of Fun (…so you know it’s good!), Make No Bones (100% vegan!) is now based down the road in The Old Workshop pub/bar in Neepsend. They’ve been adding more and more vegan food to their menu during lockdown 3, when they were open for takeaways, and they offer the likes of Big Macs, kebabs, fried chicken, pesto fries, and so much more. It’s a lovely atmospheric bar on the inside, and perfect now you can take 5 other friends! Their sister takeaway is Saucy on Abbeydale Road, which is home to some of the best vegan fried chicken burgers I have ever had, and is perfect for those nights you want to stay in.

Blue Moon Café

(2 St James’ Street, City Centre)

Blue Moon Café is dear to my heart, considering I used to go there for my lunch pretty much every other day before Lockdown 3! It serves a range of veggie and vegan salads, burritos, pies, hot food (their famous Imam Bayildi is delicious!), cakes and hot drinks. They are now back open, and will be offering up the eat-in versions of these amazing takeaway lunch boxes (see pic). You can choose a veggie/vegan hot dish and a selection of 5 salads to go with it. Inside offers a sociable cafeteria setting and it's perfect for lunch breaks.

Dana Café

(214 Crookes)

I am very sad that I still haven’t taken a picture of the BEST veggie/vegan breakfast in Sheffield, but I will describe it to you instead! Dana is home to all of your breakfast/brunch needs, and their full English breakfast consists of: 2 eggs how you like them or scrambled tofu, marinated tempeh ‘bacon’ or halloumi, 2 homemade sausage patties (divine!), 2 hash browns, sauteed kale, fried mushrooms, baked beans and sourdough toast. Thinking about it now makes me want to walk up all the hills to Crookes to go there because it’s so worth the trek!

Couch

(29-31 Campo Lane, City Centre)

Couch is the perfect brunch/lunch place which also doubles up as a cool bar. They serve amazing veggie sandwiches (the tempura broccoli sandwich is incredible), veggie brunch and have now started offering a veggie breakfast! You can also ask for their homemade chips with your sandwich and you get so many with it. Booking to eat in reopened on 17th May, and you can also get food/drinks to takeaway!

Sakushi

(27 Campo Lane, City Centre)

I live extremely close to Sakushi and have been in there more times than I can remember. Firstly, they have a cool revolving sushi bar which just makes the experience, and secondly, they’ve just started a huge vegan range of sushi, tapas, curries/noodles/poke bowls and starters - something for everyone! They reopened on 17th May, and you can now go back to picking your sushi from the belt and all the fun of nearly knocking off all of the others in the process. They’re also often on Too Good to Go (an app where you can get leftovers for cheap!), where they offer their huge sushi platters for a mere £5.

Urban Choola

(842 Ecclesall Road, Brincliffe)

For me personally, this is the best Indian restaurant I have been to, purely for the amazing Paneer Makhani curry they do! There are some other amazing Indian restaurants in Sheffield (including Zara’s in Crookes, and also the Indian street food place down the road called Mowgli) but I found Urban Choola to be my favourite out of them all. They also do a great selection of vegan curries. They’re currently on delivery apps so definitely worth checking out!

Some other amazing places I would like to try!

Pom Kitchen

(388 Sharrow Vale Road, Sharrow)

They are home to the most amazing vegan hot chocolates, milkshakes and smoothies, and also have PINK buns for their hot dogs!

VorV

(Wharncliffe Works, Green Lane, Kelham Island)

VorV stands for Veggie or Vegan, and I can’t wait to be able to try their small plates from all over the world with my friends when we can finally sit indoors with 5 others!

Icarus and Apollo

(Steelyard, Unit 4, The Yard, Bardwell Road, Neepsend)

I briefly tried Icarus and Apollo when I went to the recently opened Lane 7 outdoor venue at Plug car park. They offer veggie/vegan dishes from all of the places that the owners travelled to (e.g. Philippines, Spain, Thailand, Vietnam, Australia and more!). They have a really cute caravan that they serve their takeaway dishes from and you can also go visit them at their site in Steelyard in Kelham.

This list is by no means comprehensive, as there were so many other places I wanted to write about in such a short space (Humpit, Mowgli Street Food, Twisted Burger Company, Proove Pizza, to name a few!), but hopefully this gives you an idea of where to start looking, and some places to try out now we can finally meet with our friends indoors!
