Dear Subscriber,

This month, the International Day of Families was held on May 15. This day was proclaimed by the United Nations to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase the knowledge of the social, economic, and demographic processes affecting families. In this month’s digest dedicated to the International Day of Families, we share a UNICEF report exploring how the role of families and family policies can contribute to meeting the SDG targets, our Aid to Life resource on the best way of offering practical activities to your child around the home, a blog post exploring the benefits of chores to children, and an infographic about being a Montessori parent. We also share a UNICEF report on family-friendly policies in 41 countries around the world and a blog post on parental management of family conflict. Do not forget to visit our AMI Digital resources page to get free access to various classified cards and language materials.

Key Findings on Families, Family Policy and the Sustainable Development Goals

This synthesis report explores how the role of families, and family policies from around the world, can contribute to meeting the SDG targets. Given the key role families and family policies play in determining social progress, and in view of the national and international focus on meeting the SDGs by 2030, the timing of this publication is opportune. The report summarizes evidence across the six SDGs that cover poverty, health, education, gender equality, youth unemployment, and ending violence. Learn more here

Why Your Children Should Be Doing 'Chores', Whatever Their Age

Did you know that according to a new study having your very young children help with ‘chores’ paves the way for them to become more successful adults? While it’s always nice having your two-year-old help set the table, empty the dishwasher, pack away their toys, and keep their room tidy, teaching children to be responsible isn’t just about keeping them occupied or about assisting you. It’s one of the first steps to future success as an adult. This article explores the benefits of chores to children, whatever their age is.

Offering Activities Around the Home

You may not relish doing the cleaning or washing the dishes but young children love to do these things. Getting involved in the life of the home helps them to start to feel part of the family and being part of the family sets them on a path where they start to become aware that they are responsible for their actions. Learn more here

Parental Management of Family Conflict and Stress Is Central to Child Development

The capacity to manage, and sometimes set aside, family conflict and stress seems to lie at the heart of parenting for successful child development, according to findings highlighted by the expert researchers in this blog post. Many solutions lie beyond individual parents: policy-makers, service providers, schools and businesses bear considerable responsibility for adapting work, creating supports, developing education, and reducing poverty in ways that can lessen family conflict and stress. But individual mothers and fathers can do much to lighten the bag of family conflict and stress that undermines child development.  Learn more here

Are the World’s Richest Countries Family Friendly?

Family-friendly policies matter because they help children to get a better start in life and help parents to find the right balance between their commitments at work and at home. Yet even some of the world’s richest countries fail to offer comprehensive solutions to all families. This report focuses on two key policies: childcare leave for parents and early childhood education and care for preschool children. It reviews these policies in the 41 high- and middle-income countries that are part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) or the European Union (EU).
