05.21.21: Student Talent Night, Picture Day, and lots more!

IN THIS ISSUE

Principal's Letter

Dear Parents:

It was nice to see so many of you at various meetings throughout last week — Equity, with Superintendent Loughlin, SLT, and Wellness. You are always welcome to join us if you have not been before!

I hope that you will take a few minutes this week to complete this year's School Survey. (Families should enter “f” followed by their child’s nine-digit Student Identification [OSIS] Number to access the survey. Note that “f” must be lowercase.) I need/Booker T. needs your feedback and we also need the DOE to see your feedback, too. While we have not been able to do what you want most — to get your children back in more, we have tried to provide a strong educational program and supports for your children. Thank you in advance for completing it.

On Thursday afternoon, the Wellness Committee hosted our first One School Lunch. The goal was to give sixth graders an opportunity to get to know other students and to meet new people. While we tried to separate the students as best as we could, some landed in groups of familiar students. We mixed the students up in the midst of the event, to give them more opportunities to meet other students. The students had a good time connecting and being with each other. After the sixth-grade lunches, we will expand to the seventh grade.

I am very excited and relieved to let you know that we have a venue, date, and a tentative time for GRADUATION! Graduation will be on Wednesday, June 16th in the late afternoon at Marcus Garvey Park. I am grateful to the members of the parent committee who have been instrumental in helping to explore our options and in securing this location. Marcus Garvey Park has a small amphitheater which will hold all of the students at the same time. At the moment, we have been given clearance to have 500 people. We are hoping that this number will increase and that each graduate may be able to have at least one if not two guests present. We will continue to monitor this. In the meantime, mark your calendars.

Equity Team Updates

On May 19th we held an open Equity Meeting to share updates, begin thinking ahead to the next school year and developing a vision for addressing the needs and gaps created by the pandemic. In particular, the conversation focused on three topics: whether Equity should have a formal role within the SLT, how to ensure more equitable access to devices and high-speed internet given the increased usage of educational technology, and how to welcome students back to in-person school in a way that re-engages their love of learning and supports both their socio-emotional and academic needs.

We also encouraged everyone to come to the short meeting on Monday, May 24th to vote on the PTA proposal to add elected Equity and Wellness positions to the PTA Board. If this proposal passes, elections for these new positions will take place at the PTA meeting on June 8th.

Please also hold the date for our last meeting of the year on Wednesday, June 16th at 7pm. Register in advance for this meeting.

Finally, as we continue to honor Asian and Pacific American Heritage Month, check out this data-driven blog post describing and debunking the insidious “perpetual foreigner" stereotype.
