Homegrown Season
Brian Kalbfleisch & Friends
Premieres May 27th at 7:30pm, available until June 3rd
This is a streamed event

Brian Kalbfleisch (vocals, ukulele), Rob Fahie (double bass), Don Macdonald (violin) and Graham Tracy (percussion) will present a selection of tunes from the American and Candadian song books, a few from across the pond, and some original Kalbfleisch compositions.

Fahie, Tracy and Kalbfleisch have a long-standing musical relationship stemming from their pre-pandemic work together in the high flying Bluegrass/Swing/Psychedelic-infused group, “The Devils You Don’t”. Fans hoping for selections from the DYD repertoire will not be disappointed! Don Macdonald is a frequent collaborator bringing a top-notch melodic and rhythmic sensibility to the ensemble. Fahie, Tracy and Macdonald’s playing and backing vocals elevate the simple rhythmic ukulele strums and potent vocal stylings Kalbfleisch brings to bear.

Broken & One With
A Double Feature Event
Premieres on May 29th

Springtime usually sees our theatre bursting at the seams with local dance performances and it is with that in mind that we bring you a very special and absolutely free screening of two amazing dance films on MAY 29th at 7:00 pm! Free tickets will be available online until 6:55 pm on May 29th. Films will be available to view at 7pm and  will also feature a Zoom Q&A with the filmmaker and dancer/choreographer afterwards.

BROKEN – What happens to someone faced with an injury that threatens their ability to pursue their life’s passion? When Ballet BC’s lead ballerina Simone Orlando, suffered an injury so severe that she could hardly walk, let alone dance, she would not give up. Even after major hip surgery, Simone, fought for a chance to come back for the next season. To her, it was all or nothing. In Broken, Simone’s heart-wrenching but inspiring story unfolds through absorbing interviews, never-seen-before footage of Ballet BC’s work in creation, rehearsals and performances stunningly melded with beautiful photography shot by debut director Lynne Spencer. ONE WITH – “My father recently moved into a long-term care home. The onset of dementia was rapid and made worse by the pandemic lockdown and subsequent isolation. Although it is difficult for him to communicate, I know that he is thinking about and remembering things from his past. I know that there is an expansive inner world of thoughts, feelings, observations, and ideas that he is recollecting, processing, and trying to share with me when we spend time together. ONE WITH looks at this inner space. It is about the people and memories that we hold onto and try to never forget. This piece also looks at the idea of companionship and support, something that is essential to the well-being of those living with dementia.”

Son of John
Premieres June 5th at 7:30pm, available until June 12th
This is a streamed event

Son of John is a country/roots duo from Castlegar, British Columbia and if you can’t tell, they’re father & son.
Johnny P. Johnson has been making music for over 25 years as a solo artist and front man. His son Javan Johnson, is a multi-instrumentalist and emerging country singer/songwriter. They’ve been playing music together for over a decade and in 2017, they decided to join forces and form the duo, Son of John.
Son of John doesn’t quite fit the mold – on purpose. Country runs deep in their veins, with Johnny actively farming each year on the Saskatchewan prairies where he was born and raised and Javan growing up on the river in the mountains on the family farm in rural BC. So, you can say Son of John doesn’t make “fake country songs’, with their rootsy instrumentations – fiddle, mandolin, banjos and dobros, – capturing an authentic acoustic sound. With or without their full band on stage, their live show can bring the two-step to the party, or they can croon with harmonies only the same DNA can create.
Son of John perfectly blends two generations of country music together.

Artist Resources
Nelson Kootenay Lake Tourism and The Nelson & District Arts Council often get asked by community members and organizations for local artist contact information. Both organizations receive information about performance opportunities, grant funding, career development workshops, promotional opportunities, and much more. As a result, we want to help the local arts community to connect with those opportunities! We are starting a local database that NKLT/NDAC will reference so they can give their inquiries some options for local artists.

This is a FREE database to register for. Your personal information will never be shared with a third party. This database will be used to gather artist-related information and to create opportunities for artists and presenters. To show support and to be part of the tourism network, we ask that Artists please create a link on their website to nelsonkootenaylake.com or tag NKLT in a few social media posts. This cross promotion helps inform visitors of all there is to experience across the region. NKLT will also add registered Artists to their website as a business listing to increase their reach.

Register by April 30th! Members will be reminded around the same time next year to renew their Artist listing so we can make sure the database remains up to date with active local artists.

FACTOR understands the pandemic continues to hinder opportunities for music artists. Yet we are constantly inspired by the ingenuity and adaptability of artists and music companies in carrying through to pursue and share their music. In step with that, FACTOR continues to work with the industry to ensure our programs are supportive and flexible, adapting to current market needs as we navigate this together. For this particular fiscal year, FACTOR has increased our overall program budgets for Artist Development, Juried Sound Recording, and Video programs to assist as many artists in the creation mode as possible. We have made temporary amendments in our Live Performance program to support Virtual opportunities and will continue to do so until we can congregate at shows together once again.
