New Ministry for Ethnic Communities: The Shama Team Had Their Say at Drop-in Session and the Ethnic Women's Hui
|
|
New Zealand will have a new Ministry for Ethnic Communities in July. This is significant progress for Aotearoa ethnic communities. Minisiter Priyanca Radhakrishnan and the team from the Office of Ethnic Communities came to the Waikato on 8th May, to consult on the areas that the Ministry should focus on. Members of the Shama team attended Ethnic Womens Hui in the morning and the drop in session in the afternoon. Key questions that discussed were:
Aspiration and Vision What will life for New Zealanders from our ethnic communities be like in 20 years’ time?
Priorities
Which issues should the new Ministry focus on over the next few years, so that it can make the biggest difference for the future?
Top priorities include: education, health, employment, leadership, safety and security, celebrating cultural diversity, accessing government services, concerns over racism and discrimination, and other important issues.

Shama's Board of Trustees are finalists for the Women in Governance Awards 2021!!
|
|
|
Shama's Board of Trustees is one of the five finalists in the Gender Diverse Organisation of the Year's category of the Women's in Governance Award 2021. This is recognition to the commitment of our Trustees throughout the years to ethnic women's empowerment.
The winners will be announced at a special Awards Gala Dinner to be held at the Hilton Auckland on Thursday 10 June 2021.

Enabling cultural safety in social services: sharing our skills!

|
The Sexual Violence Crisis team has delivered 3 eye-opening trainings in the Waikato this month. The sessions aim at helping mainstream services to build culturally safe environments for staff members and clients. Also, it was a great opportunity to share about Shama's national sexual violence crisis services and to build more connections with stakeholders.
|
|
|
The attendees were from different organisations such as Single Parent Services Waikato, Corrections, Police, Midlands Sexual Assault Support Services and Shama as well.
The participants were excited with the content discussed and the opportunity to learn from practical examples. The feedback we received highlighted how beneficial this activity was, they said it helped them to become more confident when supporting ethnic communities. We are incredibly happy to see how these educational activities can effectively help crisis services to increase their connection with ethnic clients.

Ethnic parents thrilled with new strategies to connect with their kids
|
|
Through Shama’s Cross-Cultural Parenting Programme, ethnic parents are pleasantly surprised to find how they can turn their sense of frustration and anger with their children’s misbehaviour into a more connected and peaceful way of being together.
During May we run workshops for Vietnamese and Chinese parents. One of the participants said that she "gained a lot from the workshop". Her highlights were understanding that "Chinese and New Zealand culture have different approaches to education for children; that kids need motivation to behave well, and that children are parent's friend, children shouldn't be controlled and forced to have the same ideals as their parents".
What is unique about this course is that we explore through a cultural perspective, how parents' upbringing and culture, and therefore their perceptions, and expectations, affect their relationship with their children and their style of parenting. Parenting well can be hard but it can be made even more challenging in a new country with different laws, language and values. We look at how parents can work within these complexities and strategies to find more calm, connection, and joy in parenting.
The course is structured in a way that parents are sharing their common challenges and also their wisdom with each other to find solutions that work within their ethnic context. Parents particularly love the role playing activities where we get to practice with real life situations. Parents feel reassured that what they are struggling with is common and that they have the support from others in their community to navigate through together. The course also helps parents create their family vision and mission statement informed by each family’s unique culture and values.

Shama is giving our youth programme a community-led overhaul to gain an understanding on emerging issues from our ethnic rangatahi and what activities youths want and need.
You are warmly invited to our youth hui to plan the Shama Youth programme moving forward at Trust Waikato on 5th June from 10am to 12.30pm.

Have your say on the Family Violence and Sexual Violence National Strategy
|
|
|
The Government is partnering with communities to create a new National Strategy and Action Plans to eliminate family violence and sexual violence in Aotearoa New Zealand.
From May 12, special community-led hui involving communities with lived experience of family violence and sexual violence are being held all around New Zealand, asking people to consider: What do you think needs to be in a National Strategy and Action Plan, from your communities’ point of view?
At the same time, you can tell us what you think should be done to eliminate family violence and sexual violence, by filling out an online survey on Citizen Space, a safe and confidential online platform hosted by the Ministry of Justice.

In the first part of the June Workshop, we will find out that there is more to manifestation than sheer willpower and positive thinking. Then we follow up with goal setting - developing an action plan to motivate and guide you! We will find out how to grow from desire and intention to achieve specific, measurable, and realistic goals in time.

Together we are stronger! Join the network of ethnic therapist across Aotearoa.

Shama has a long-term strategic plan to support Ethnically Diverse therapists regionally and nationally with ongoing connection. We also want to see more ethnic therapists talking about best practice and how to address family and sexual harm.
Our team has organised an Ethnically Diverse Therapists Connection Hui Facebook Group. The group's mission is to keep connecting, keep reaching out, and keep encouraging one another. We invite you to join us!
