ZIM ENTRY REQUIEMENTS

Tourism community initiative We Are Victoria Falls has summarised current requirements for visitors entering Zimbabwe by air.  All arrivals must present a PCR negative certificate issued within 48 hours of departure for Zimbabwe and complete a health & travel history entry form to hand in at immigration.  All arrivals will be temperature checked and anyone presenting symptoms of COVID-19 will be required to take a PCR test at their own cost and be quarantined at their own expense if tested positive for COVID-19. Land Borders remain closed at this stage.  Check out our Wild Zambezi Travel Advice summarising Zimbabwe's COVID-19 Guidelines for tourism and providing a copy of the Ministry of Health Travellers Surveillance Entry Form for Coronavirus which all arrivals are required to complete.

HEADING FOR HERD IMMUNITY

Zimbabwe's COVID-19 vaccine programme introduced in March is forging ahead, with Victoria Falls reported as already achieving herd immunity - a first in Southern Africa. The prioritisation of this and other tourism hot-spots for vaccination by Zimbabwe's Ministry of Health sends a strong message to the rest of the world that Zimbabwe is serious about visitor safety. More good news is that Zimbabwe's vaccine of choice - Sinopharm - has now officially joined the list of vaccines approved by the WHO for emergency use and global roll-out.

WE FEATURE LITTLE GEMS

This month we are celebrating the small things to be enjoyed on a safari in the wild. As all good professional guides know, it's not just about the BIG FIVE large mammals. Some of the smallest critters are truly the most fascinating (either because of their unique behaviour, or because of some particular quality or property that is significant in some way).  In our latest Wild Zambezi website Blog we sought inspiration from travel partners and safari guides to showcase a few of their favourite LITTLE GEMS IN THE WILD.  We hope that our readers far and wide will really enjoy these stories.

VICTORIA FALLS

VIC FALLS FLIGHTS OPEN UP

Airlines are gradually resuming flights into the tourism hub of Victoria FallsAirlink have reintroduced Cape Town-Vic Falls flights twice a week (to be increased later this year).  BA Comair (pictured) have resumed Johannesburg-Vic Falls flights twice a week.  These will increase to daily from June.  Fastjet has daily flights Johannesburg- Vic Falls and Vic-Falls-Harare. Ethiopian Airlines now fly Addis Ababa-Vic Falls three times a week.  Kenya Airways will recommence Nairobi-Vic Falls flights on Fridays from 4th June, and MackAir now run a daily Kasane-Vic Falls flight schedule.

KAZUNGULA BRIDGE OPENS

This brand new road, rail and pedestrian bridge over the Zambezi River at Kazungula, linking Botswana with Zambia upstream of Victoria Falls, was officially opened for traffic on 10 May 2021. It replaces the existing ferry service, and will hugely improve access to the KAZA (Okavango/Zambezi area).  It will also, hopefully, reduce heavy trucking traffic in and around Victoria Falls and over its own historic bridge link to Zambia.
LAKE KARIBA
LOOK WHAT'S SPRUNG UP ON THE SHORES OF LAKE KARIBA!
Bookings for the brand new tented camp on Fothergill Island,in the Matusadona National Park, Lake Kariba, are to open on the 1st of June 2021 with the first guests expected in August 2021.  Watch this space....

A TREAT FOR FIRST-TIME SAFARI GUESTS AT RHINO CAMP!

Lion sightings on safari are not as common as the marketing blurbs and wildlife movies make out.  You need luck, (and the help of a good professional tracker and guide). But Rhino Safari Camp's first international guests since the start of COVID-19 were in for a treat when they came across this mating pair of lions in the Matusadona National Park last week. And, best of all - it was their first safari to Africa!  How awesome is that?

KARIBA TOWN FEATURE

Wild Zambezi is delighted to have contributed a feature article entitled Kariba Town - What's on Offer? in the latest edition (May-Aug 2021) of the magazine TRAVEL & LEISURE ZAMBIA & ZIMBABWE. ZAMBEZI VALLEY

NEW DECK AT KAVINGA

The new wooden deck overlooking the pan at Kavinga Safari Camp in Mana Pools is proving to be a great hit with guests. It's perfectly safe and easy to access. It has wood-slatted sides for cover, so that any wildlife coming to the pan can't detect any movement.  Slats also extend overhead to cover half the area, providing dappled shade and relief from the sun in the hotter months.  It's a peaceful alternative when Kavinga's popular photographic Hide (cunningly designed to resemble a termite mound) is full of photographers!  It's also great for morning coffee, private meals and special candlelit dinners under the stars, close to the pan. How wonderful to listen to elephants drinking while you're enjoying your main course!

ZIM SAFARI "THE ABC WAY"

"The first sight from the air of the mighty Zambezi River took my breath away! We had sundowners on the banks of the river and took photographs that looked like they were photoshopped with green screens! No filters needed." So says Eloise about her first trip to Zimbabwe with African Bush Camps.  "The ABC way... is all about surprising the guests in unexpected ways that make the time at their camps memorable and truly sets them apart."

TAIL ENDER
MONSTERS OF THE DEEP
No... it's not a shark, it's a vundu (Heterobranchus longifilis) - the largest freshwater fish in Southern Africa.  These large air-breathing catfish are found in the Zambezi River and Lake Kariba and can reach up to 1.5 m (5 ft) in length and 55 kg (121 lb) in weight.  (Bull sharks are larger, but occur in both fresh and saltwater.)

They provide excellent sport (and hard work) for keen anglers, but since Vundu are a protected species in Zimbabwe this must be strictly on a Catch and Release basis

This awesome image comes from the River God Adventures fishing video referred to above, and shows a large vundu just released, swimming back into the depths of the Zambezi to live another day. The footage perfectly captures the beautiful, languid movement of these magnificent river monsters.

You can read more about vundu in a Wild Zambezi Blog written by Changa Safari Camp, which is situated in the Matusadona National Park on Lake Kariba and, like other camps on the lake, offers fishing as one of its prime tourism activities.
