May 2021

Greetings to all of the friends and supporters of the Hoover Institution Library & Archives.

This month, as the nation continues to reach vaccination milestones, we continue our planning for a return to normalcy in the fall. Our Hoover colleagues have been busy as ever with new acquisitions, video resources for researchers, and more.

Our curators chaired sessions in this year’s Association of Asian Studies conference and our collections on Russia, Eurasia, and Asia continue to grow. We are also pleased to announce that several of journal articles commemorating our Centennial are now available online.

As June draws near, we have several events to keep you informed about, this includes the upcoming Fanning the Flames speaker series and the 80th anniversary of our Hoover Tower.  Please stay tuned.

Wishing good health to you and yours.

-Eric Wakin, Director
New & Noteworthy

Association of Asian Studies 2021

During this year’s virtual annual conference of the Association of Asian Studies, held on March 22-26, Hsiao-ting Lin, Research Fellow and Curator of the Modern China collection, chaired a panel on “Taiwan in the World: Subnational and Supranational Perspectives”. Curator of the Japanese Diaspora Initiative, Kay Ueda organized a panel on “The Material Life of the Archive: Promises and Challenges in Documenting the Japanese Diaspora”.

SEEIR Journal

The latest double issue of Slavic & East European Information Resources features articles about the Hoover Institution Library & Archives, delving into topics related to early Russian acquisitions, considerations for contemporary access, and key collections of interest to researchers of Slavic and East European history. This particular issue commemorates our Hoover Centennial (2020). Contributors include:

New Instructional Videos For Researchers!

We have a new series of videos available for researchers who are interested in the Aeon registration process and obtaining reference scans of archival and library materials. The videos are also subtitled in English, Polish, Chinese and Russian.

Celebrating 25 Years of Service

Congratulation to Issayas Tesfamariam, archivist and head of microfilming, for 25 years of service at the Hoover Institution! Issayas, an ambassador for Hoover's archives as well as a teacher and author, has brought overwhelming expertise and enthusiasm to his work and made huge volumes of our collection available to scholars all over the world.
Acquisitions

Samuel Kelly

Our latest acquisition includes the papers of Samuel Kelly, an electronic engineer involved in commercial negotiations and sales of US technology to the USSR in the 1970s and 1980s. The collection is a window into, among other things, Soviet attempts to gain access to Western technology and goods, and US attempts to ensure security and technological superiority in relation to the Soviet Union.

Hou Chia-chu

We have also acquired the personal papers of Hou Chia-chu (1928–2007), a renowned economist who is best known for his contributions to the studies of economic theory, economic history, and economic thoughts on premodern and modern China, as well as his participation in policy formulation for Taiwan’s economic development from the 1970s to the late 1990s.
