What we talked about this week

There was an election on Tuesday!  Full election results.  In contested races, results were:
  • McMinnville School Board: in Position 1, two Latinx candidates unfortunately split the vote, and Republican candidate Bizon won the race.  For Position 2, Abbie Warmbier beat Barbara Carter.
  • Newberg School Board: Zone 1: Trevor DeHart, the SOS candidate, beat incumbent Ron Mock by 198 votes.  Zone 4: incumbent Ines Pena beat SOS candidate John Read by 150 votes.  In Zone 5, another split race led SOS candidate Renee Powell to a win against incumbent Bob Woodruff, who pulled out of the race too late to remove his name from the ballot, and Tai Harden.
  • Yamhill-Carlton School Board: Position 1, JaJetta Dumdi won with 44% of the vote against 3 other candidates.
  • In Newberg, for CPRD, winners were Jim McMaster, Lisa Rogers, and Judy Brown (the only COPS candidate to be elected).

Commissioners Berschauer and Starrett got some news coverage for two resolutions raised in the BOC meeting on Thursday regarding vaccinations.  One resolution would ban county clinics from providing the vaccine to children 15-17.  This violates state law, and may be illegal.  The resolution passed. The second Resolution would ban "vaccine passports" in Yamhill County.  Due to some questions about legality, voting on this was delayed til next week's meeting.

“What I'd like to make sure happens at least,” said Starrett, “Is that county employees know they can come to work without being asked, ‘Your papers, please,’ like something out of the Third Reich.”

Both Commissioner Berschauer and Starrett repeatedly referenced "overwhelming testimony in favor", indicating that public comments received supported the resolutions.  A read through the public comment from Thursday suggests a call to action was put out in advance by the Commissioners, since the resolutions were only publicly available a day or two before the meeting (note that about 100 pages of this document are an attachment, not direct public comment; there are also several repeated emails).  If you'd like to submit public comment on the passage of the resolution this week, or the resolution banning vaccine passports next week, it is recommended that you email the following email addresses: bocinfo@co.yamhill.or.us; nmontesano@newsregister.comstarrettm@co.yamhill.or.usberschauerl@co.yamhill.or.uskullac@co.yamhill.or.us Remember that your email (including the email address) will automatically become public record.
