MISSION MINUTE

MISSION MINUTE SPOTLIGHT:

Lutheran Community Care Centre of Thunder Bay

OUR PURPOSE

As Christians we strive to actively live out our faith by sharing God’s love with other people. With compassion we address the entire spectrum of human need—the physical, spiritual, emotional, social, and economic. The Lutherans of the Thunder Bay area have joined together to help prevent and relieve human distress and to promote personal development and wellbeing through the services of the Lutheran Community Care Centre.

While motivated by our beliefs, our services are available to all people. We partner with others in the community who share our desire to help others in need.

WHAT WE DO

Our Pastoral Care Program provides spiritual comfort and worship opportunities to residents in eight nursing homes. Street Reach Ministries and the Street Chaplain engage people who are on the fringe of society, often dealing with precarious housing, poverty, addiction, mental illness, or past traumatic events.

Lutheran Community Care is greatly involved with adults with a developmental disability. We are the access point for adult developmental services for the northern region of Ontario. We administer a direct funding program called “Passport” for the region. Individuals decide how to use their funds to increase community involvement and their level of independence, as well as to allow their caregivers to have respite. Our case managers help adults with a developmental disability live independently in Thunder Bay and communities along the north shore of Lake Superior.

Our general Social Service Workers focus on seniors providing advocacy, coordination of health care, budgeting, and support with daily living tasks.

DID YOU KNOW?

The Lutheran Community Care Centre has offices in Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Marathon, Dryden, and three locations in Thunder Bay.

WANT TO GET INVOLVED?

In our volunteers and our staff we look for people that are compassionate, non-judgmental, patient, and willing to understand the lives of people different from their own; those with experience providing human services to people with disabilities, seniors, and marginalized people in our society; and those with a cultural sensitivity to Indigenous people.

MISSIONS IN NICARAGUA!

Deaconess Jeryll Mejìa currently serves as a missionary with her husband Pastor Maximo Román Urroz in the community of Telica at the Lutheran Redentore Church of San Paublo.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, since Your Son has saved the world through His holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death and sent forth His Church to proclaim the Good News of this salvation to the ends of the earth and to distribute His saving gifts of grace, we pray that You would sustain Deaconess Mejia by Your Spirit and richly bless her labours for the sake of the Gospel; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now forever. C: Amen

SERMON OF THE WEEK

These weekly sermons, written by various LCC pastors, are primarily intended for congregations without a pastor and for those unable to provide online services during exceptional circumstances. Each written sermon is accompanied by the Collect of the Day, appointed Scripture Readings, suggested hymns, and prayers. The Scripture Readings are from the Three-Year Lectionary Series of the Lutheran Service Book (LSB). The suggested hymns are taken from Lutheran Service Book: Hymn Selection Guide – (OT) are hymns that fit with the Old Testament Reading, (E) the Epistle, and (G) the Gospel.

Good Stewards of God's Varied Grace

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” - 1 Peter 4:10

All that we have comes from God. The grace, the gifts, the blessings – all His. Our role as Christians is to use them as stewards, not as owners. That means we should seek to use them in the way the Owner wants them used. Of course, that’s a lot different than how the world looks at these things. Our old Adam does a good job of reminding us that we did it all, we deserve the blessings, we can do whatever we like with what we have. In this constant struggle we listen to His Word, pray for His Wisdom, and receive His grace, and do our best to be good stewards.

As we consider the area of material blessings, perhaps we can use a portion to support the work of our church. Establishing a gift in your Will that goes to any of the many ministries of Lutheran Church–Canada is a wonderful way of stewarding your stuff. A gift in your Will has zero impact on your life today but is a great blessing for your church when you die.

To learn more about how you can establish a planned gift in your Will, please contact your regional Gift Coordinator or visit Lutheran Foundation Canada’s website at www.lutheranfoundation.ca.

Naming your children as co-executors is not necessarily a loving thing to do. Parents will often make their children co-executors thinking it is the best way to ensure their estate is managed well and no one will have hurt feelings. Unfortunately, co-executors create challenges as well, especially if the executors reside in different provinces or countries. Delays occur in exchanging documents for signatures. Family conflicts can be amplified leading to disagreements on a variety of decisions. Aptitude and ability may not be the same across each child and executor liability is shared regardless of who makes the decisions. A better solution might be to choose the best person for the job and name the other(s) as alternate executors.

The Holy Spirit Brings the Dead to Life by the Righteousness of Christ

In returning to His Father by way of the cross and resurrection, Christ Jesus sends “the Helper” to His Church, that is, “the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father.” The Spirit testifies of Christ and glorifies Him by taking what is His and declaring it to the world in the preaching of repentance for the forgiveness of sins (John 15:26; 16:7, 14). He convicts the world of sin by the word of the Law, He forgives sins and justifies sinners by the Word of the Gospel, and He bestows the faith that says “Amen” to this righteousness of God (John 16:8–11). Therefore, the Lord pours out His Spirit on the apostles, that by their preaching, the Spirit should be given to His entire Church. As the multitudes are gathered from all the nations by “this sound,” that is, by the preaching of “the mighty works of God” in Christ Jesus, so does God the Father pour out the Spirit of His Son “on all flesh” (Acts 2:6, 11, 17). The Lord God breathes upon the slain, and so shall they live; for so the Lord has spoken, and He shall do it (Ezek. 37:5–14).
