The obituary below was published by the Beaton Institute.
We are heartbroken to hear the news that teacher and historian Jim St. Clair has passed away. Jim was born in Massachusetts in 1930 and his mother Louise was a MacFarlane of Mull River. After completing studies at Harvard University, his family connection brought Jim to Cape Breton where one of his earliest positions was working as an assistant for A.W.R. MacKenzie at Colaisde na Gàidhlig/The Gaelic College.
Jim worked his entire life as a champion for the heritage and culture sector on the Island, and was instrumental in establishing important infrastructure such as the Federation of Nova Scotian Heritage and Heritage Cape Breton Connection (formerly the Iona Connection). His research and genealogical publications and presentations have helped thousands discover their roots. He sat on numerous boards and participated in many valuable projects. However, he might be most fondly remembered for his storytelling skills and famous "Then and Now" column on CBC Cape Breton's Information Morning.
Staff of the Beaton Institute worked with Jim for decades, and he was a mentor and teacher to many in the heritage field. His work to encourage and support new heritage professionals may be less well-known, but just as significant as his other many achievements. CBU awarded Jim an honorary degree in 2000 recognizing his contribution to the Island.
We extend our deepest condolences to Jim's family, friends, and community. He was much loved and will be missed by so many.

May is Mìos nan Gàidheal | Gaelic Nova Scotia Month, a time to celebrate and create awareness of the history, culture, language, contributions, and achievements of Gaels across the province.
2021 marks the 25th anniversary of Gaelic Nova Scotia Month with the theme, Air Adhart Le Chéile | Forward Together.
The theme celebrates the togetherness of the Gaelic communities and resilience found in Gaels throughout history. It also honours the togetherness found in all Nova Scotians particularly over the past 14 months.
The official virtual launch for Mìos nan Gàidheal |Gaelic Nova Scotia Month took place on Wednesday, May 12 at 10:00 am.

Independent Gaelic immersion school being established in Mabou, Nova Scotia

A group of parents and community members are opening North America’s first Gaelic immersion school in September 2021. The school will be in Mabou, Nova Scotia and will operate independent of the public school system.
The initiative comes from a priority stated at the community level and finds support from Comhairle na Gàidhlig and the Gaelic College, along with other key organizations and stakeholders. The school will open with a cohort of Grade Primary students in September 2021, adding a grade each successive year, building to a P-4 school within five years.
The school will deliver its curriculum primarily through the Montessori methodology, which focuses on a child’s innate desire and ability to learn and where balanced attention is given to the intellectual, physical, emotional and spiritual development of all children. Along with the regular learning outcomes prescribed by the Province of Nova Scotia, Gaelic culture and local knowledge will be at the core of what and how students learn at Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide. Small class sizes, multi-age groupings, catering to diverse learners and being a part of a sustainable and meaningful community are core features of the school.
Gaelic has been spoken in the province for nearly two-hundred and fifty years and has seen a resurgence in recent years, in part due to the popularity of community-based learning.
The school will be primarily privately funded with a fundraising drive underway through the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia. Further information can be obtained at www.taighsgoile.ca.

Language in Lyrics will be preparing an upcoming free professional development sessions on lesson plan development. Participants may then be paid to develop a Gaelic lesson plan from a song in the Language in Lyrics corpus. We're looking for feedback from community language teachers on how to best go forward with these sessions. Gaelic Online Registration Open
We’re excited to let you know that registration for classes starting September 2021 is now open! We’ve re-branded the program as Gaelic Online | Gàidhlig air Loidhne with Colaisde na Gàidhlig. There are supplemental programs available according to your learning needs and where you are in your journey that we can fill you in on later as well.
Gaelic Online classes consist of 28 weeks of live instruction via Zoom, where you’ll learn with experienced instructors and people from around world. You’ll improve your ability to speak, read and write in the language of the Scottish Gaels. Learning this language is a key that can unlock a rich treasure-house of song, story, community, humour and friendship!

Froilig tar-sgrìobhaidh | Transcription Frolic
THE CAPE BRETON GAELIC FOLKLORE COLLECTION (on Sruth nan Gàidheal) is a treasure trove and we are inviting you to come admire the jewels with us.
For the month of May (Gaelic Awareness Month in Nova Scotia) we are hosting an asynchronous online transcription frolic to collectively catalogue the songs in this amazing audio collection. We are particularly looking for people to listen to the songs and transcribe the first lines of the chorus and the first verse and determine which kind of song it is.

Dúsgadh | Awakening
Dùsgadh (n. awakening) is an exciting new collaboration between Scottish Bafta winning animator Cat Bruce and internationally renowned, multi award winning folk group, Breabach. This unique and innovative project takes the form of an animated film with original score. Based on ‘The Sea Maiden’ a folkloric tale collected by John Francis Campbell, the film is available to view in Gaelic and English, narrated by renowned tradition bearer Margaret Bennet. It features a soundtrack comprising five new pieces of music, one from each of Breabach’s five members. It is a powerful and poignant piece of work conceived and delivered throughout a turbulent and challenging year for the arts; all music was written, recorded and produced individually, from home.The hour long ‘evening with’ presentation features behind the scenes footage and unseen live performances as well as a
Q & A hosted by BBC Radio Scotland broadcaster and musician Anna Massie.
After a successful virtual tour of Scotland, the St. Andrew’s Society of Toronto is delighted to host a Canadian screening of Dùsgadh on Wednesday 26th May at 7pm. Dé an go 's a' Ghàidhealtachd a' seo? What's on the go in the Nova Scotia Gàidhealtachd this week in 1893 - join us Thursday evenings to hear about "current happenings" and some historical pieces too! And, there's usually a piece about the weather!
We’ll be LIVE on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00pm Atlantic (11:00pm UK) doing a selected, bilingual reading from the Gàidhlig newspaper, Mac-Talla. At about 7:30, we'll begin a Gàidhlig reading of a few pieces (a written synopsis will be available to all).
