Community input and participatory design culminate in an award-winning library

When Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) needed to close one of its busiest and most culturally diverse branches to make way for a new building, Leroy Street Studio employed a hands-on participatory design process, collaborating with staff and local students to transform a derelict courthouse into a community-centered library.

Project partners include: BPL, Sunset Park branch librarians, Hester Street, Sciame, Center for Family Life; artists Mauricio Trenard and Annika Bowker; Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez and NYC Council Member Carlos Menchaca.
