Hey,

Sorry, I’m a day late – so it's Happy Saturday!

Here’s a brief idea from me, and a few content recommendations that have the potential to shift your thinking in a significant way.

IDEA FROM ME:

Momentum over motivation.

It feels counter-intuitive to think about momentum and motivation in that order. But, I've found that it's much more useful to get better at being able to start something in an unmotivated state – rather than trying to get motivated to start something.

Once you get the first step out of the way, momentum helps propel you forward – which then drives motivation. This then kickstarts the flywheel of motivation and momentum.

For example, I’m rarely motivated to run or workout. Sure, perhaps if I’m with a friend and the stars align, then it will happen. But, most of the time I don’t look forward to it. However, once I start, I begin to feel good about myself. I begin to actually enjoy it.

The next time a workout comes around, it gets that tiny bit easier to start because I remember how I’ll feel once I get going. Then, when you then string enough workouts together to see progression and results, the flywheel just goes even faster.

I’ve now fully accepted that this is how it works. And when you do that, it gives you permission to stop beating yourself up if you don't feel motivated to do something you should do. Instead, just force yourself to push past the discomfort of getting started. After that, things usually work themselves out OK.

THINGS TO SHARE:

Chasing Excellence: A Story About Building the World?s Fittest Athletes by Ben Bergeron (book)

I’ve decided to spend more time going back and reading my favourite life changing books, rather than new ones. I’ve started with Chasing Excellence and was quickly reminded why I loved it so much the first time round.

Don’t be fooled, this isn’t a fitness book. It’s a mindset book, told through stories of how Ben has helped build athletes into Crossfit champions.

Jesse Itzler – IT’S NOT A GAME. Man was NOT designed to turn old at 40 (instagram post)

Jesse Itzler is gold for telling it how it is. I’m now 42, and I’m starting to see more illness amongst my friends and peers. This post is a great reminder why everyone should put their health first – above everything else. And it’s never too late.

How to Buy and Cook the Perfect Steak by Mark Sisson

I love a good steak. Over the last few years, I’ve become much better at cooking it through some simple techniques. I recently stumbled across this article and it incorporated many of those techniques, and a few more. It’s a really useful guide with some great tips.

P.S. I’m trying to convince myself I need one of these to take things to the next level. One day!

Have a GREAT weekend!

Cheers,
Daniel
