    Chemsafety June 2021 Newsletter

Welcome to Chemsafety's June Newsletter.  In this edition;
An Update from our Managing Director

We have had a wet and wild start to winter in Christchurch with the torrential rain in our region.  Our thoughts go out to those affected by the flooding.

At both branches we are continuing to do a significant amount of respirator fit testing work and it is great to see this type of work being valued by businesses.  A new initiative has been launched by WorkSafe called Life Shavers which discusses the importance of being clean shaven when wearing a respirator, get your team to check it out.

We had an amazing response to our GHS Classification Changes Webinar presented by our very own HazSubs guru, Janet Connochie, thanks to all who attended.

Winter brings its own health and safety challenges including the emergence of moulds in indoor spaces, carbon monoxide from diesel heaters, and reduced ventilation in workshops as roller doors are kept closed.  As always we are here to talk through any concerns you have.

Stay healthy and safe.

Respiratory Protection Programme Webinar

On 10 June our Managing Director and Principal Occupational Hygienist, Bridgette Jennings, will be presenting a webinar on Respiratory Protection Programmes.

Respirators (dust masks, half face masks etc) are a common tool for controlling exposure to dusts and chemicals. However, PPE is last on the hierarchy of control because many factors can affect how well they protect people from the hazard. A respiratory protection programme (RPP) is key to be able to manage respirators correctly so you can be sure they are reducing exposure. We will discuss the following important points to help you develop a robust RPP.

The programme should include information on the following:
  • The key features of a good RPP
  • Who should run the programme
  • Fit testing and facial hair management
  • Selection of the right respiratory protection
  • Cartridge change schedules
  • Training and Maintenance
