Play-a-thon is This Friday!

May 21st at 6:00 pm is our annual Play-a-thon fundraiser! Like everything else this year, the format is different but the energy the students have put into it is the same. Mr. Riler will be MC'ing the event and presenting lots of different videos:
  • Performances by different sections of the band
  • Performances by self-organized groups of students
  • Videos from band alums
  • Videos from parents
As you probably know, the Play-a-thon is our biggest and most important fundraiser of the year and continues to be the primary source of operating expenses for the entire CHS band/music program. The CHS Band program receives no direct funding from the school district. It’s no exaggeration to say that your donations are what keep this program running.

Our fundraising site is online and open for donations now. Please direct friends and family to the CHS Play-a-thon GoFundMe page, where they will be inspired by the amazing video from Funnelbox that outlines what goes on in the band room and why it is so important. Just make sure to remind them to include the name of the student on behalf of whom they are donating.

Thank you for your support!

Percussion & Trombone Sectionals This Week

Percussion sectional is Monday, 4:00–4:50 pm.
Trombones sectional is Thursday, 4:00–4:50 pm.

Bring a folding or regular music stand. A stand to those who do not own a stand will be provided. Materials to cover the bells will be available. Face masks may be removed when playing.
Recording Due for Commencement

Commencement needs a song from the band.  All band students have been invited  to record “Sine Nomine” by Tuesday, May 18.
State & Solo Ensemble Results

The event was done differently due to the restrictions of the day.  All performances were submitted as video recordings and adjudicated by professional musicians.  Due to the nature of the event, no places were given out this year.  Recognition was given based on how the student performed against the standard.

If a student received a score of 626 - 660 (two judges) they received a Superior.
If a student received a score of 594 - 625 (two judges) they received an Outstanding
If a student received a score of 593 or lower they received an Excellent.

Students were listed in alphabetical order, so I am sharing a group of students that our students ended up in.  They could be the best of that group, or the last one in that grouping.

Here is how our student performers did:
Leo Marchyok - Oboe (Superior) and one of top 3 performances.
Lena Thomas - Bassoon (Outstanding) and one of top 4 performances
Maia Connelly - Trumpet (Outstanding) and one of top 6 performances
Henry Parker - Trombone (Outstanding) and one of top 3 performances
Radley Baker - Mallets (Outstanding) and one of top 6 performances
Brass Quintet - Large Brass Ens. (Outstanding) top performance of the category.
(Maia Connelly, Sal Wallin, Miles Wheeler, Liem Friel, Aaron Asay)

We can be very proud of all of these students, as well as the following students who qualified for the State Solo contest, but were alternates and not invited:

Iris Stasiuk - Flute
Camille Burgoine - Flute
Paige Lowery - Clarinet
Alice Bokman - Oboe
Isaac Englemann - Oboe
Ariah Piper - Bassoon

Of all of the soloists listed in this announcement, only 1 student is a senior. The future is VERY bright in the Cleveland HS band program!
