DUG Network
Mid-May Urban Gardener Newsletter

Hello Gardeners!

If you're receiving this newsletter for the first time welcome!

We recently partnered with the amazing folks who manage Rooting DC, DC's Annual Urban Ag Festival, to increase the number of people receiving this free, solicitation-free, all volunteer managed, newsletter.

Rooting DC and DUG Network both share a common goal to promote, support and grow through building connections, the DC urban Ag movement.  Since Rooting DC only focuses on one amazing event a year, we decided to partner and continue Rooting DC's mission by combining our email lists for the DUG Newsletter to continue promoting, supporting and connecting people in the Urban Ag movement all year long.

Although its super easy to unsubscribe to this newsletter at anytime, please take a second to check it out first.   The DUG Network newsletter is a comprehensive list of workshops, events, programs, job openings, grants and gardening tips for the urban AG, food security and environmental world, happening in the greater DC area.

We send a newsletter out every two weeks, and 1-3 times a year (3 is our self imposed max) we highlight an urgent and important cause or program (never a solicitation).  We're very sensitive about not overloading anyone's inbox.  Also the DUG Network is managed by an all volunteer cooperative that does not try to profit in any way.

Check Out The DUG Network Resource Website

DUG Network also has an amazing website promoting over 500 different urban Ag, food security and environmental organizations and resources operating in the greater DC area.

Need Help Promoting an Event or Resource?

If you know of any garden, food and environmental events or opportunities that the community should know about, please email us the details (you can just respond to this e-mail) to include in the next newsletter.

Need Help Bringing this Newsletter Beyond the Computer

In addition, we need your help to bring awareness to all these amazing resources to all people in DC regardless if they have access to a computer or not.  We're looking for people or organizations that can help us print and post this newsletter so people without regular computer access can see these resources.  If you can help us print this newsletter and post it in any public place( libraries, community centers, coffee shops, barber shops, etc) please let us know.

A Black Scientist Was An Early Cicada Researcher. His Work Has Been Mostly Overlooked
Benjamin Banneker – a free Black man born in 1731 – is best known for a land survey that established the original borders of Washington, D.C. But the naturalist also broke ground in another field: cicada research.

Small Business Kitchen Connections Survey
The DC Food Policy Council has made a top 2021 strategy to support the development of affordable commercial kitchen spaces, particularly for Black and Latinx-led food businesses. To support this, the Entrepreneurship & Food Jobs Working Group and the Innovation & Equitable Development team at the Department of Small & Local Business Development launched a survey to gather information about food businesses looking for space and the businesses, restaurants, nonprofits, schools, and faith-based institutions that have commercial kitchens that could potentially host food makers in their under-utilized hours. While we cannot guarantee finding matches for everyone who completes this survey, we are hoping to connect folks looking for kitchen access to those who have it. Anonymized data will also be used to demonstrate the demand for kitchen space to inform the work of the Entrepreneurship & Food Jobs Working Group. Please send any questions to inno.ed@dc.gov

Have a Swarm of Bees? Here's What To Do
As nerdy as it may seem, “swarm” means something different to a beekeeper than it does to a normal person, but we are still here to help you out. Please email dcbees@dcbeekeepers.org, call (202)255-4318 if you have a swarm like this, and we will try to collect it.

The COVID-19 crisis is exposing an enduring and extremely dangerous problem – the inequities within our food system. In honor of a global response, A Growing Culture (AGC) is announcing The Hunger for Justice Series, a weekly live broadcast about how we feed everyone in a Post-Covid World. AGC will showcase the stories and voices of our global network, highlighting local solutions to feeding the world on a changing planet. Each week, we will be hosting an hour long, candid conversation with activists at the frontlines of the global food movement. Themes like gender equality, farmworker rights, trade policy, seed patents, climate change, and land grabs will be explored through the lens of food sovereignty.

Educational Webinars

Application for Workshop Ideas at Community Forklift
Every year we host dozens of free workshops in order for our community to learn more about sustainability, reuse, restoration, and DIY in their homes and lives. Part of our mission here at Community Forklift is to bring free education to everyone, and as such we do not charge for our workshops, feeling that everyone should have access to green living and find ways to incorporate sustainability into their everyday lives. We do offer a $75 gift certificate to our warehouse to all workshop presenters as a token of our appreciation for their time, expertise, and commitment to our local communities. We also do quite a bit of marketing for each workshop in our newsletter, on our website, and on our social media (a combined reach of over 20,000 people), which we find to be another way we can give back to our presenters and hopefully send traffic their way in the future.

Empowering The Diner Through Wine Session
May 21, 8:30PM - 10:00PM
Empowering the Diner is a Black women-led food and beverage event centered on collaboration and inclusion in which we bring folx together to discuss, learn, and explore their palate and dining experiences. We seek to dismantle colonizer-led perspectives and gatekeeping practices by challenging the status quo through creative, multi-faceted, and BIPOC-led educational and hospitable experiences. By changing how we access food and beverage education and hospitality, we make space for more folx who feel excluded by the discriminatory, racist, and sexist practices embedded in the industry from the guest to the professional.

Ground Covers: Great Alternatives to Turf Grass
Saturday, May 29, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Instructor: Kathy Jentz, Editor of Washington Gardener Magazine
Groundcovers are low-growing plants that serve many different purposes in the landscape from limiting weed growth to stabilizing slopes to adding texture to your garden. Maintaining a lawn of turf grass is one of the most expensive and time-consuming uses for your land. Constant mowing, fertilizing, weeding, watering, re-seeding, edging, and aerating not only eat up your resources but can be harsh on the environment. Lawns do not absorb water run-off as well as planting beds, and many of the chemicals you use to maintain it are toxic to the nearby streambeds and the Chesapeake Bay. Find out more about these beautiful, hard-working plants and the best kinds to use for the Mid-Atlantic region.

American Horticultural Society 29th National Children & Youth Garden Symposium Conference
July 7-9
For nearly three decades, the American Horticultural Society’s National Children & Youth Garden Symposium (NCYGS) has been cultivating tomorrow’s gardeners by energizing, inspiring, and training today’s garden educators. The 29th annual professional development conference will again take place as a virtual event instead of an in-person convening. The professional development content will be offered as a collection of live and pre-recorded webinars with nearly forty peer-led lectures and workshops viewable on demand.  Speakers will give educators both the inspiration and the tools they need to discover and nurture the passion within a child and create the space and support for a child to pursue that passion. Registration ($60 for members of the American Horticultural Society and $80 for non-members) includes access to all live and pre-recorded session content which will be available until June 30, 2022. Learn more and register at: https://ahsgardening.org/gardening-programs/youth-gardening/ncygs/ncygs-2021/registration/

Help Rescue Food for People In Need During COVID-19!
These are very challenging times for many, but one silver lining of all this is the many organizations and individuals who are working tirelessly to help those in need in their communities. Food assistance organizations are already facing higher demand for food. However, as restaurants close or alter their menus, events and catering orders are canceled, and offices are moving to 100% telework, there is a large amount of excess food that could be donated and needs to be placed with a food assistance organization very quickly. Food Rescue US- DC’s network of volunteers is ready to rescue that food and get it to the organizations who need it. Please, spread the word to restaurants, cafes, caterers, event spaces, offices, and any other businesses who may find themselves with excess food to donate that Food Rescue US - DC can rescue that food and make sure it gets to the right place. If you have food to donate or would like to volunteer to rescue food, you can:
