Dear Partners, Associates and friends of GRLI

Is global responsibility about taking action to develop global sustainability?

Our pod gatherings in May considered the timely publication of 'Our Planet, Our Future: An Urgent Call for Action'. The call for planetary stewardship signed by Nobel Laureates argues in its opening lines for the need to address destabilizing inequalities in the world. They argue that without urgent transformational action, humanity is taking colossal risks with our common future.

Our GRLI pod gatherings in May explored what new questions, if any, were raised by the Nobel call, what it does and does not address, and what it holds for our action inquiry.

It was interesting to note how 'Our Planet, Our Future' summarises many of the contextual and contributing factors that make the case for global responsibility but does so without ever mentioning the word responsibility. It emphasises instead the need for planetary stewardship and touts "global sustainability" as an overarching goal.

As we know from GRLI's learning and the guiding principles of our work, achieving a new kind of future can only be manifested through a different way of being and acting in the now. Where global sustainability describes a desirable future state, global responsibility is about taking action here and now.

In this newsletter we highlight a though-provoking blog post on discovering the SDGs' potential for management educators. We also welcome two new full Partners and an Independent Associate to our community.  A glance at the Events tab shows a full complement of events ahead. We would also like to ask you to please save the date well in advance for 16-18 March 2022 when the International Responsible Leadership Academic Conference hosted by University of Stellenbosch Business School takes place in South Africa.

Warm wishes,

John North
Executive Director
Upcoming Events
These are some of the upcoming events we'll be supporting and participating in alongside our GRLI Partners and Associates.
  • 16 & 17 June - PRME Global Forum

We will be contributing to the Panel taking place on 17 June titled "What does collective impact in the Decade of Action look like amid a New Age Capitalism?" alongside AACSB, GBSN, CEEMAN & others.

  • 29 & 30 June - GRLI Deans & Directors Cohort 2nd gathering for 2021.

  • 20 & 22 July - Partner & Associate pods - see your email and monthly calendar invites.

Note there will be no pod gatherings in June due to the number of external events that our Partners and Associates are involved in this month. This also allows the Guardian (meeting 17 June) to take stock of the first two rounds of pod gatherings.

For the July pods we are responding to the urgent need for more diversity in perspectives by inviting Partners and Associates to bring a +1 to the conversation. More specifically someone representing a critical or unheard perspective in the context of our work. Through this we hope to weave a richer tapestry of perspectives on developing global responsibility.

  • SAVE THE DATE: 16-18 March 2022 - The International Responsible Leadership Academic Conference hosted by University of Stellenbosch Business School in South Africa

Discovering the SDGs' Hidden Potential
The SDGs present a wicked problem for management educators, due to the Goals' inherent interdependances and conflicting priorities. We're pleased to share a new blog article by Professors Lars Moratis and Frans Melissen that offers three potential routes for engagement. We encourage readers to offer their own reflections, inquiries and experiences.
The authors are the the holders of the Chair in Management Education for Sustainability, a joint initiative by Antwerp Management School and Breda University of Applied Sciences.

This blogpost is based on their peer-reviewed article ‘Bolstering Responsible Management Education through the Sustainable Development Goals: Three Perspectives’ that was recently published in Management Learning.
