Dear Partners, Associates and friends of GRLI
Is global responsibility about taking action to develop global sustainability?
Our pod gatherings in May considered the timely publication of 'Our Planet, Our Future: An Urgent Call for Action'. The call for planetary stewardship signed by Nobel Laureates argues in its opening lines for the need to address destabilizing inequalities in the world. They argue that without urgent transformational action, humanity is taking colossal risks with our common future.
Our GRLI pod gatherings in May explored what new questions, if any, were raised by the Nobel call, what it does and does not address, and what it holds for our action inquiry.
It was interesting to note how 'Our Planet, Our Future' summarises many of the contextual and contributing factors that make the case for global responsibility but does so without ever mentioning the word responsibility. It emphasises instead the need for planetary stewardship and touts "global sustainability" as an overarching goal.
As we know from GRLI's learning and the guiding principles of our work, achieving a new kind of future can only be manifested through a different way of being and acting in the now. Where global sustainability describes a desirable future state, global responsibility is about taking action here and now.
In this newsletter we highlight a though-provoking blog post on discovering the SDGs' potential for management educators. We also welcome two new full Partners and an Independent Associate to our community. A glance at the Events tab shows a full complement of events ahead. We would also like to ask you to please save the date well in advance for 16-18 March 2022 when the International Responsible Leadership Academic Conference hosted by University of Stellenbosch Business School takes place in South Africa.
Warm wishes,
John North
