Wheatbelt & Beyond Youth Mentoring
Congratulations to the Committee and schools on
a third school to now join this valuable program.
Wheatbelt & Beyond Youth Mentoring Inc (WBYM) is a NFP organisation that was formed in 2019 by RDA Wheatbelt Deputy Chair, Karen Strange and Bruce Rock DHS Deputy Principal, Janine Dayman following 10 years of developing and running a successful mentoring program at the Bruce Rock District High School. Forming WBYM has provided the opportunity to share the benefits of this flexible, cost effective, successful program with other regional, rural and remote District High Schools in WA.

Our secondary students face unique challenges due to isolation of their community and a small cohorts of peers. They have to make decisions about their upper secondary education in Year 7 or 8 to ensure enrolment at an appropriate school for Year 11 & 12, often also having to leave home at the end of Year 10 or earlier and board away. Limited exposure to careers, isolation from tertiary studying opportunities and few opportunities to challenge one’s comfort zone, results in many students feeling uncomfortable and unwilling to put themselves out there and to be exposed to new things. This mentoring program is a great opportunity for our students to safely engage outside their community and open their minds to options and possibilities.

The inception of WBYM has ensured the continuation of the very successful Bruce Rock DHS program, established a program at Carnamah DHS in 2020 and now the Quairading District High School. Testament to a lot of hard work and commitment to growing our young people.
