A lot has changed since September, but what I wrote in the introduction of an interview with Barrett Swanson still holds true for me: The essays in Lost in Summerland perfectly encapsulate the urgency and complexity of these strange times, somehow simultaneously timeless and prophetic — mining the past to find resonances and reverberations to carry us into the future.

And after a year (and change) of limited human interaction, it feels safe to say we are all pretty starved for good conversation  — even missing the days of eavesdropping on a good conversation at a cafe or bar. So in lieu of a traditional book review, Margaret Leonard of Dotters Books generously corresponded with me via email about her thoughts on Barrett Swanson’s essay collection (which comes out May 18 from Counterpoint Press). As always, I loved hearing Margaret's eloquent and sharp insights. We'd be honored if you hopped over to Medium to read our thoughts: https://elizabethdecleyre.medium.com/conversation-with-a-bookseller-lost-in-summerland-by-barrett-swanson-cba9d621bf37

I also hope you'll order a copy from Dotters Books or your local indie bookseller. And if you need further convincing, Ploughshares and The Paris Review also wrote glowing reviews. You can also revisit my interview with Swanson for the Chippewa Valley Writers Guild last September. And finally, perhaps the only silver lining of the pandemic, you can attend some virtual author events! Not having to leave your house to hear great authors read is a luxury (especially if you live in a rural area without access to many events and have social anxiety), and Swanson has four this month for Lost in Summerland:
