From UN News

Henrietta Fore, the agency’s Executive Director, issued the statement from New York as G7 leaders gear up for their summit next month in the United Kingdom, and as vaccine producer India continues to confront the rapid surge.

Heed the warning

UNICEF is a partner in COVAX, the global vaccine equity mechanism, which is set to deliver its 65 millionth dose this week.  However, Ms Fore said “it should have been at least its 170 millionth.”

The shortfall will be closer to 190 million doses by the time the G7 meet, she added, and as a deadly second wave of COVID-19 will likely continue to sweep across India and many of its neighbours.

“We have issued repeated warnings of the risks of letting down our guard and leaving low- and middle-income countries without equitable access to vaccines, diagnostics and therapeutics. We are concerned that the deadly spike in India is a precursor to what will happen if those warnings remain unheeded,” she said. Read more...

Over half of LGBTQI students in Europe bullied in school: UNESCO

More than one in two LGBTQI students in Europe have suffered bullying based on their sexuality, the UN educational, cultural and scientific body (UNESCOsaid on Monday, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Transphobia.

In a survey of more than 17,000 youngsters aged 13 to 24, 54 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people said that they had been bullied at least once, based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.

“Everyone says you can be whoever you want, you can be free, you can express yourself at school…then if you try to be different, you get backlash”, said one 19-year-old student participating in the survey.

The study highlighted widespread discriminatory attitudes, with 83 per cent of students reporting that they had heard negative comments about LGBTQI students, while 67 per cent said that they had been the target of critical comments at least once.

Further findings from UNESCO’s Global Education Monitoring Report indicated that nearly six in 10 students “never reported bullying incidents to any school staff” and fewer than two in 10 did so systematically. Read more...

Civil Society in Action

Latter-day Saint Charities, the humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and an organization associated the United Nations through the Department of Global Communications (DGC), joins with diverse organizations around the world to solve some of the greatest and most challenging issues. We welcome the opportunity to seek common ground, where we can partner with global organizations and benefit God’s children, wherever they may live in the world.

For nearly a decade, Latter-day Saint Charities has partnered with UNICEF to support mothers and children around the world. Thus it was natural to support the United Nations and UNICEF once again against the backdrop of a global pandemic. On February 26, 2021, UNICEF announced that Latter-day Saint Charities had made a donation of $20 million dollar in support of UNICEF’s ACT-accelerator and COVAX work, becoming the single largest private sector donor to date in supporting the fight against COVID.

Speaking of the donation, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta H. Fore said, “Your support will ensure that the COVID-19 vaccine is distributed equitably to countries around the world. Because no one is safe until everyone is safe. UNICEF values the unique role that our faith-based partners play in reaching communities around the world. When we join forces around our shared commitment to children’s well-being, the power of our collective impact creates truly transformational change.”

Bishop Gérald Caussé, Presiding Bishop, of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints added, “As more adults in vulnerable communities are vaccinated, critical health, nutritional, and educational services for children in need will be able to resume. We hold hope in our hearts, not only of overcoming the pandemic, but of seeing a brighter future for all children, and their families.”

We invite all organizations associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications, in consultative status with ECOSOC, and those without a formal relationship with the United Nations, to support UNICEF’s ACT-accelerator and the COVAX initiative in whatever way they can. #OnlyTogether will we end this pandemic.

Good food is everything

The future of the world depends on good food. It’s that simple.

Good food keeps us healthy. It helps us reach our potential. It strengthens our communities, powers our economies, and protects our planet.

But not everyone gets good food every day – and the way we produce and market food is harming our environment. This has to change.

That’s why the UN Secretary-General has called for the historic, first-ever Food Systems Summit this year.

WE NEED ACTION

Here's what you can do today:

Join us in inspiring action

What does good food mean to you? Perhaps it’s special moments with the ones you love, a treasured childhood memory, or a traditional recipe handed down for generations. Tell us today by recording and sharing a video.

SHARE YOUR STORY

Become a Food Systems Hero

We need people like you to become a Food Systems Hero and commit to learning, sharing, gathering and acting for food systems transformation. Ahead of the Summit, we'll send you ways to get your community involved in the global movement for safe, sustainable and equitable food systems.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

In recent years, there has been increasing acknowledgement of the important role mental health plays in achieving global development goals, as illustrated by the inclusion of mental health in the Sustainable Development Goals. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. People with severe mental health conditions die prematurely – as much as two decades early – due to preventable physical conditions.

Despite progress in some countries, people with mental health conditions often experience severe human rights violations, discrimination, and stigma.

Many mental health conditions can be effectively treated at relatively low cost, yet the gap between people needing care and those with access to care remains substantial. Effective treatment coverage remains extremely low.

Increased investment is required on all fronts: for mental health awareness to increase understanding and reduce stigma; for efforts to increase access to quality mental health care and effective treatments; and for research to identify new treatments and improve existing treatments for all mental disorders.

Decent Work and Economic Growth: Why it Matters?

To promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all.

Sustained and inclusive economic growth can drive progress, create decent jobs for all and improve living standards. Even before the outbreak of COVID-19, one in five countries – home to bil- lions of people living in poverty – were likely to work that is productive and delivers a fair income, security in the workplace and social protection for families, better prospects for personal development and social integration. A continued lack of decent work opportunities, insuf- ficient investments and under-consumption lead to an erosion of the basic social contract underlying democratic societies: that all must share in progress. 2021 IS THE INTERNATIONAL YEAR FOR THE ELIMINATION OF CHILD LABOUR

The International Labour Organization says that substantial progress has been achieved in recent years – between 2000 and 2016 alone, there was a 38 per cent decrease in child labour globally. Despite the extraordinary momentum, more than 150 million children around the world are still in child labour – a third of them are outside the education system, nearly 40 percent work in hazardous conditions and almost two-thirds work more than 43 hours per week. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic is threatening to reverse years of progress.

The international year, established by the UN General Assembly, is a clarion call for countries to take immediate and effective measures to end child labour in all its form by 2025.

World Economic Situation and Prospects 2021

A once-in-a-century crisis—a Great Disruption unleashed by the COVID-19 pandemic—hit the world economy in 2020. The pandemic reached every corner of the world, infecting more than 90 million and, so far, has killed close to 2 million people worldwide. Governments around the world responded rapidly—and boldly—to stem the health and economic contagion of the crisis. Fiscal and monetary stimulus packages were quickly rolled out to save the economy. The crisis responses, however, entailed difficult choices between saving lives and saving livelihoods, between speed of delivery and efficiency, and between short-term costs and long-term impacts.

UNCTAD Update (4 to 14 May)

This week UNCTAD drew the curtain on the programme for the 24th Commission on Science and Technology for Development. The week-long event (17-21 May) will bring together UN leaders, scientists and experts to explore how science, technology and innovation can contribute to a sustainable and resilient COVID-19 recovery. Read more.

UNCTAD also told the story of women entrepreneurs changing the gender narrative against all odds. Agda Óliver, a car shop owner in Brazil, and Lama Sha’sha’a, co-founder of a robotics academy in Jordan, share their experiences overcoming barriers to become successful entrepreneurs in sectors seen by many as "for men". Explore

This week UNCTAD also launched a new portal that tracks COVID-19’s impact on trade and development. The data-rich portal enhances policymakers’ understanding of the pandemic’s wide-ranging impact and helps them design suitable recovery policies. Read more in EnglishFrançaisEspañol.

Last week UNCTAD released new e-commerce figures which showed global e-commerce jumping to $26.7 trillion as COVID-19 boosted online sales. The pandemic has, however, resulted in mixed fortunes for some e-commerce companies, reversing the profits of firms offering services such as ride-hailing and travel. Then UNCTAD also spotlighted the story of Empreteco, Julian Omalla, a prize-winning Ugandan woman entrepreneur better known as "Mama Cheers," who makes one of her country's most popular fruit drinks. The government has awarded her a $10 million grant to build a fresh juice factory in northern Uganda. Read her story in EnglishFrançaisEspañol.

Youth Survey on Education Priorities for the Global and Regional cooperation

The outcomes of global cooperation in education over the past two decades have fallen short of reaching expected objectives around the SDG 4 Education 2030 agenda and targets.

At the 2020 Global Education Meeting the international community called on UNESCO to lead a multi-stakeholder reflection to review and reform the global cooperation mechanism for education. A comprehensive Working Group, co-chaired by UNESCO and Norway, is currently developing a proposal to be endorsed at the July 2021 extraordinary Global Education Meeting. Added to the Working Group’s deliberation, a wider consultation process led by UNESCO and partners is taking place throughout the month of May.

Yet, education is a key topic affecting young peoples’ lives. In particular, the skills and values that youth need for the future are very much at stake. Young people have first-hand experiences of the very education challenges and issues that are being discussed at global meetings. Moreover, they are also drivers of positive change and are working actively within their own communities and networks to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 on education. This is why we want to hear from young people and get their ideas on how to improve education cooperation together!

The United Nations Department of Global Communications Outreach Division is pleased to invite your high school to participate in the 12th Annual Global Student Conference on slavery and the transatlantic slave trade.

The theme reflects the global movement to end injustices whose roots lie in the slave trade. The theme highlights the importance of educating about the history of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery, to bring about an acknowledgment of slavery’s impact on the modern world, and action to address its long-lasting effects. The theme guides the Programme’s development of educational outreach and remembrance to mobilize action against prejudice, racism and injustice.

Select students will be invited to present their project at the conference. Teachers and students are asked to register for the conference no later than 28 May 2021.

Support the campaign for a Civil Society Champion

Last Friday (7 May), while outlining his vision for a second term as Secretary-General to member states, António Guterres called for the establishment of a specific mechanism to facilitate deeper inclusion of civil society in the UN’s work.

Last year we launched a dedicated report presenting the case for such a mechanism, to be spearheaded by a senior UN focal point for civil society. Since then, over 50 states have called for our proposal to be implemented, along with hundreds of civil society groups - large and small - from all regions. The Secretary-General’s words show that this is clearly an idea whose time has come.

We are now working hard for this proposal to be included in the Secretary-General’s Our Common Agenda UN75 concluding report, to be published in September 2021.

We need your help! Show your support for this crucial campaign by:
  1. Signing up to the UN’s open consultation on Our Common Agenda
  2. Voting for Together First’s civil society champion proposal, which can be found under the theme “Our United Nations”, Challenge 9.

Thank you!

UN Department of Global Communications will highlight the achievements of civil society on behalf of the climate, the planet, and global well-being through social media posts and on our website*. We know your actions will inspire others. Working together, we can make a difference.
