Ontiveros, Burdette, Migoya, Ramos win top 2021 student awards at Just Desserts

Vanessa Ontiveros, Sam Burdette, Diana Ramos and Clara Migoya captured top honors May 13 at the School of Journalism’s 55th Just Desserts student awards celebration. Director Carol Schwalbe emceed the virtual event and honored retiring professors Susan Knight, Linda Lumsden, William Schmidt and Nancy Sharkey. ProPublica’s Nicole Santa Cruz (’09) gave the closing remarks. Read story and watch video.

     



Sotomayor steps down from council

Frank Sotomayor (’66) has stepped down as chair of the Journalism Advisory Council to spend more time with his family and work on a book. Mark Woodhams is now the new chair, and Chyrl Hill Lander (’76) is the new vice chair. Read story.


Ewing wins spring 2021 Drew Gyorke Memorial Photojournalism Award

Kate Ewing captured the spring 2021 Drew Gyorke Memorial Photojournalism Award for her image of a ballet teacher and dancer. Sophia Heemsbergen finished second, while Sohi Kang took third place. The contest featured 12 student finalists from Prof. Kim Newton’s JOUR 203 photography class. Read story.



McKisson wins SBS teaching award


Prof. Michael McKisson won the spring 2021 undergraduate lower-division teaching award from the College of Social & Behavioral Sciences. Prof. Carol Schwalbe, director of the school, nominated McKisson, calling him “an agent of change in the school, the university and the profession.” Read more.

• Prof. Celeste González de Bustamante was promoted to full professor. “We congratulate you on your impactful and courageous research on the issues that journalists face in Latin America,” the University Advisory Committee on Promotion and Tenure wrote.

• Prof. Jessica Retis was promoted to full professor. “Your record of international and transnational scholarship, teaching, leadership, outreach, inclusion, and service is truly inspiring,” the University Advisory Committee on Promotion and Tenure wrote.

Prof. Susan E. Swanberg received a 2021 Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Research Travel Grant to conduct research at the laboratory’s archives on her project titled “The Rise and Fall of Davenport's Dream: The De-Funding of the Eugenics Record Office.”

• Debbie Cross, program coordinator for graduate studies, won the Carol and Cecil Schwalbe Staff Award for Outstanding Service.

Fred Brock, adjunct instructor, won the Hugh and Jan Harelson Excellence in Teaching Award.

Prof. Linda Lumsden wrote the introduction to “Standing Together: Inez Milholland’s Final Campaign for Women’s Suffrage.” The New York Times featured the project in "She Was More Than Just the ‘Most Beautiful Suffragist.

• Andrés Domínguez (’13), administrative assistant, graduated from the UA law school with a master’s of legal studies. He was accepted as a volunteer non-attorney board member with Southern Arizona Legal Aid, a nonprofit providing free legal services to people who would not otherwise have equal access to justice.

Mark Buckman (’76 M.A.) recently retired from Schoolyard Communications, a California-based communications firm that serves school districts.

Stephanie Casanova (’14) is leaving the Arizona Daily Star to be a breaking news/general assignment reporter for the Chicago Tribune.

Eddie Celaya (’19) is moving from the Arizona Daily Star opinion page to cover breaking news and marijuana for the Star.

Jack Cooper (’20) is a morning newscast producer at WBNG 12 in Binghamton, New York.

Jasmine Ann Demers (’19 M.A.) is leaving the Arizona Daily Star in June to join the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting as a Report for America corps member investigating issues related to youth and social services.

Parisa Hajizadeh-Amini has joined the L.A. Times design team as art director. She was previously a designer at Gannett’s Phoenix design studio.

Yoohyun Jung (’15) has left the Honolulu Civil Beat for the San Francisco Chronicle, where she is a data reporter.

James McKnight (’90) published “Yellow & Black Fever - Life, Love and Baseball in the Land of the Rising Sun,” based on his 12 years living in Japan. 

Justin Pierce (’20) won first place for his sports column and honorable mention for sports reporting in the NDNA Better Newspaper Contest. Pierce writes for the Wahpeton Daily News in North Dakota.

Justin Spears (’17) of the Arizona Daily Star has returned to ESPN Tucson Radio for the rebranded “Spears and Ali” sports talk show with local attorney Ali Farhang.
