'Tis the Season: Town Meeting Season Has Begun!

It’s the first week of Brookline’s Town Meeting; there’s a new Town Moderator, a new Selectboard member and a new chair and vice-chair, new Town Meeting members, and 40 warrant articles to discuss. In 2021, our civic conversations are entering a new chapter.

As always, BIG is covering every moment
of these important townwide conversations.
Watch them LIVE at brooklineinteractive.org/live
or via our community cable channels, or at
your leisure the day after in our Town Meeting Playlist on YouTube and via our home page

In this email, you’ll see some special reports and highlight reels, including our 2020 Annual Report covering much of BIG’s civic work over the past 15 months in Covid Times and outlining our youth media and educational programs, board development, creative members, and partnerships.

We hope you’ll agree with other community leaders in this recent compilation video that BIG has been an essential part of Brookline during a critical time, and that our work has taken on greater importance throughout the pandemic.

Despite providing such critical community value, BIG stands to lose 50% of our budget in the next five years.

In the final days of Town Meeting next week, there will be a resolution (#40) on the future of community media in Brookline, brought by Town Meeting members Bonnie Bastien and Dan Salzman, who are also BIG board members. We hope you’ll support BIG by asking your TMMs and Selectboard members to support this resolution, and consider making a donation to help BIG survive.

If passed, this resolution would create a longer-term, community-wide effort to identify stable funding for BIG, unlike the current BIG funding -per cable subscriber fees- which are in a precipitous decline of 20% annually. It would establish a Town community media working group, and encourage the Town to consider future, funded partnerships with BIG.

You can also show even more BIG LOVE through our new I HEART BIG campaign, launching today: donate, buy t-shirts, and change your FB profile pic to support BIG!

Thank you for your support, in this past year and always,

Kathy Bisbee, Executive Director, and the entire team at BIG!

Watch: Tommy Vitolo Explains Town Government Structure - May 4th, 2021
In this segment from BIG's 2021 Brookline Town Election coverage
(originally aired May 4, 2021), State Representative Tommy Vitolo explains
the origins and functions of Town Meeting.

What is Town Meeting?

Town Meeting is Brookline’s Legislative arm of government. It consists of 240 elected Town Meeting members, plus the members of the Select Board, and any state representative or state senator who resides in Brookline. In addition, the Town Moderator, who presides over Town Meeting, and the Town Clerk, who acts as secretary, are voting members.

The 240 Town Meeting members are elected by precinct, with 15 members elected from each of the town’s 16 precincts. The members are elected for staggered 3-year terms so that 5 members are elected from each precinct each year in the May annual town election.

Responsibilities & Access

Town Meeting is responsible for passing a balanced annual town budget, and enacts all town bylaws. An Annual Town Meeting is held in the spring to enact the following year’s budget, plus whatever other matters are placed on the Town Meeting warrant, either by the Select Board or by citizen petition.

Although only elected Town Meeting members may vote and propose motions, the public is invited to attend and the sessions are carried live courtesy of Brookline Interactive Group. Watch live on Comcast 23 / RCN 15 / 613 HD or stream online at brooklineinteractive.org/live. Recordings of Town Meeting sessions will be made available on the Brookline Interactive Group Youtube channel.
