One of the things we’ve been missing most during this era of physical distancing is the ability to gather with our neighbors at our favorite local food establishments. One of our favorite after-work spots, ever since they opened in January 2018, has been Cully Central on the corner of Going and Cully Blvd. After a hiatus following some unplanned kitchen remodels due to a small fire, the Lao street food hotspot has created an amazing outdoor dining space for us to enjoy those delicious Lao plates we love. We sat down with the owner, Ae Sangasy, to hear a bit more about the inspiration behind Cully Central and what the future holds.
What inspired you to open Cully Central back in 2018?
Ae Sangasy: We wanted the world to know and experience what Lao cuisine has to offer. We wanted to share the amazing food from Laos with people that may never even heard of us. It's unfortunate that not many people are aware of our cuisine, but once they have a taste, it's life-changing to their taste buds. If you're Lao or have had the food before and don't get it often for whatever reason, it is definitely a taste from your family's kitchen. Sharing nostalgic food experiences is our goal.
What exciting things are happening soon at your business?
AS: We built a ton of patio seating; making more space to accommodate the new COVID-19 requirements. We just recently got our full liquor license, so we now have a full bar which is super exciting. We constantly add items to our feature menu to give customers more chances to taste the food from our homeland.
What’s your favorite thing about the Cully neighborhood?
AS: The neighborhood is extremely supportive, every time they come through our doors, they tell us how happy they are that we are here in their neighborhood. It makes us feel like we are part of their family. They are very welcoming. They support us through everything, even when we had the kitchen fire. They were still donating and sending us encouraging words. The support is out of this world. It definitely warms our hearts.
Is there anything else you want Cully community members to know about your business?
AS: We are a small family-owned business, we want the community to know that as much as they have our back, we have their backs too. We will do what we can to provide a safe space for the community to gather. If the community is ever in need of support, donation, collaboration, anything at all, we are here 1000% for them as they are for us. Being an immigrant, we know what family means to us; sticking together is our greatest strength, so we would love to treat the Cully community as our own family as they have done for us.
We look forward to seeing you in line for takeout or to give a wave across the newly opened patio seating! Stay safe, and stay local!
