National response: Updated ATAGI clinical guidance on COVID-19 vaccine

Updated ATAGI clinical guidance on COVID-19 vaccine in Australia in 2021 (version 3.0) is now available.

It includes information on thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome, updates on vaccine storage and handling, SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, and medical conditions associated with an increased risk of severe illness.

National response: Australia secures 25 million doses of Moderna vaccine

The Australian Government has secured 25 million doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, which has shown an overall vaccine efficacy against symptomatic COVID-19 of 94.1 per cent, and 100 per cent efficacy against severe COVID-19.

Tasmanian Goverment updates influenza website

Flu season is approaching in Tasmania, and Public Health Services has updated the Tasmanian Government's influenza website for vaccine providers and vaccine consumers with up-to-date information about:

  • flu vaccination, including National Immunisation Program eligibility
  • which flu vaccines are available
  • the 2021 Immunisation Provider Toolkit
  • timing of flu vaccines with COVID-19 vaccines in 2021.
Melbourne Vaccine Education Centre 2021 flu vaccine fact sheet

The Melbourne Vaccine Education Centre has created an online fact sheet that includes information on:

  • the influenza strains present in the 2021 vaccines
  • vaccine brand recommendations for different age groups
  • recommended doses
  • advice on the co-administration of flu vaccines.
New National Strategic Action Plan for Pain Management

The Australian Government has launched a National Strategic Action Plan for Pain Management that recommends eight goals and will focus on reducing the burden of disease and improving the quality of life and care for patients.

New Heart Foundation position statement on coronary artery calcium scoring

The Heart Foundation has released a position statement on coronary artery calcium scoring for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in Australia.

The statement considers the evolving evidence on the use of coronary artery calcium (CAC) scoring for defining cardiovascular risk in the context of Australian practice, and provides advice to health professionals regarding the use of CAC scoring in primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in Australia.

Recently updated Tasmanian HealthPathways

The following Tasmanian HealthPathways have been updated:

You can log into Tasmanian HealtPathways by using the username connectingcare and the password health.
Accessing National Cancer Screening Program records via NCSR portal
You can now access your patient’s National Bowel and National Cervical Screening Program records by signing up to the NCSR Health Care Provider Portal using your PRODA account.

The portal enables you to:
  • check when your patient is due for bowel or cervical screening
  • request a bowel screening kit for your patient
  • view cervical cancer screening histories
  • submit data to the National Bowel and National Cervical Screening Programs.

Cardiac Community Network - The Education Interface Program – webinar series
The Cardiac Community Network has presented the Education Interface Program, supported by Primary Health Tasmania in partnership with the General Practice Liaison Officers, since November.

Costs range from free to $20 for each event.
Asthma Australia webinar about treatable asthma traits in pregnancy
Asthma Australia is hosting a webinar at 6.30pm on Monday 24 May about the treatable traits of asthma in pregnancy for any health professionals who have an interest in asthma management in pregnancy.

Three nationally and internationally renowned researchers, Professor Michael Peek, Dr Vanessa Murphy PhD and Professor Vanessa McDonald, will be presenting.
Healthed webcast about COVID-19 vaccine, lower back pain, and more
Healthed is hosting a free webcast from 7.00pm to 9.00pm on Tuesday 25 May that will cover clot risks and herd immunity relative to the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, acute lower back pain, cardiac CTs, the new herpes zoster vaccine, and LARCs.
Fourth respiratory clinical update webinar
The fourth and final webinar in the respiratory clinical update series is being held from 6.30pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 26 May.

The topic is obstructive sleep apnoea, presented by Dr Ai-Ming Wong, respiratory and sleep physician, Royal Hobart Hospital.

Health professionals interested in health promotion in Tasmania's north west are invited to an online health promotion networking meeting from 12.00pm to 1.30pm on Thursday 3 June.

Webinar for pharmacists about palliative care drugs in renal dysfunction
The Centre for Palliative Care Research and Education will host a free online event for pharmacists from 5.30pm to 6.15pm on Tuesday 15 June about how to identify symptom control needs and prescribing anxiety in renal dysfunction.
