Weekly Message from Mr Harding, Executive Head Teacher
|
|
You would hardly believe that it's nearly summer with the shockingly bad weather we have had over the last few weeks! In a normal year we would be in the midst of the exam season and we would be looking forward to the second half term by focusing on the transition arrangements for our new students starting in September. In keeping with the rest of the year we are having to do things very differently (again!) with our teaching staff taking on the role of the examiners. This additional demand on staff is huge. I know that the half term break will be very welcome.
Keep an eye out for next week's newsletter as we will be exploring some further adjustments on the road back to a form of normality and reporting to parents accordingly.

Regional Competition - Student Achievement
|
|
|
The West Midlands Police Regional Cyber Crime Unit co-ordinate annual challenges for young people. The country’s brightest young cyber minds were crowned winners of Matrix Challenge 2020, a competition pitting the most talented 11-17-year-olds against a series of digital tasks aimed at promoting positive pathways into cyber security careers.
Beginning in January 2020, the competition saw 65,000 participants from around the UK use their digital skills to tackle coding, code breaking and knowledge-based challenges, with winners crowned in two age categories. Over 28,000 from the West Midlands region took part, with 20 making it to the final events, held remotely in January.
Our Year 12 student Nick E achieved the highest points in the West Midlands region, the highest in his age group for our region 15-17, and was placed 10th nationally. Well done!
Nick has received a certificate from the Chief Superintendent and will receive a prize for his achievements.
These annual challenges are co-ordinated by the National Crime Agency and help to run annual national challenges foryoung people to take part in enhance their cyber and tech skills while also educating them on the Computer Misuse Act.

Update - Easing of Covid Restrictions
|
|
|
|
A reminder of the easing of restrictions as part of the route out of lockdown. The most significant change is that pupils no longer need to wear face coverings in classrooms or communal areas, unless they wish to.
Currently and until further notice all pupils must continue to wear a face covering when travelling on our school buses and public transport unless they are exempt.
Our other control measures remain in place for now and it is important that we remain vigilant with regard to:
- Handwashing and good respiratory hygiene
- Operating in Year bubbles
- Encouraging social distancing wherever possible
- One-way systems around school
- Changes / phasing to elements of the school day
We also ask that pupils continue to complete two Lateral Flow tests per week (on Sunday and Wednesday) and report the results to NHS Track and Trace. This will continue to keep our school community safe as the restrictions are relaxed.

Students are still being encouraged to sign up for a free online tool recently produced by a charity called Read for Good. Students are sent unique web links where they register their reading and the number of minutes they have spent reading, which then contributes to a 'school total'. It's really easy to use - for pupils to be able to log a variety of different texts on this, e.g. article, comic, book. MOBILE PHONE POLICY
A reminder that students are not allowed to use mobile phones on site during the school day, with the exception of Sixth Form students who can use them when working in the Sixth Form centre only.
Years 9, 10, 11
Rules
1. Students are not permitted to carry or use mobile phones within the
school at any point during the school day, including break and lunch.
2. Phones must either be left at Student Services at the start of the school
day or switched off in their school bag.
Rationale
The school places great importance on the wellbeing and safety of all
individuals and mobile phone use during the school day has been proven
to lead to incidents of;
➢ bullying
➢ intimidation
➢ deteriorating mental health and wellbeing.
Learning is impacted upon in a negative way by issues around mobile phone use for social purposes.

Reminder that students and staff are now being asked to conduct 2 lateral flow tests a week at home. We suggest that tests are done a few days apart for example on Sundays and Wednesdays.
Students received more self-test kits before Easter to see them through the next few weeks.

Have your circumstances changed recently?

Parents claiming some benefits can claim free school meals for any of their children who are registered at a Staffordshire school and who would normally be at school at lunch time. School meals are a good way to ensure that your child eats well at lunchtime and you can save yourself time and money.
Even if you don't want your children to have the meals, claiming them helps their school. The more eligible parents who claim meals, the more funding the school receives.
