May - Month of Mary
The Virtue of Charity & Saying YES

May is the month of Mary. The mother of Jesus. The mother of our Church. Mary is cherished and has many roles in our Church. Our Blessed Mother is known by many names, including Our Lady of Charity for she always is giving of herself, totally. And that is what runs through all her actions and interactions, when she was living on this Earth and since she was assumed into Heaven. Mary embodies charity. She is faithful - saying YES to God.

Mary grew up simply and was from a family of little consequence to those in power. Yet she was chosen. God often seems to select those the world ignores or casts aside. Earlier this month we remembered Our Lady of Fatima's apparitions to three shepherd children, Lucia Santos, and her two cousins, Jacinta and Francisco Marto. They said YES, just like Mary.

Mattie, who hailed from Prince George's County, attended Mass several times a week at little Holy Rosary Church in Rosaryville, Maryland. Mattie, some might say, seemingly had little offer, but YES. Mattie said YES to God and to his mission of sharing his Heartsongs and reminding everyone that they matter. Mattie said YES, when his body was failing, to continue with his speaking engagements and writings. And Mattie said YES when God stopped sending him messages thus indicating that the time had come for Mattie to leave his Mom and earthly home.

We are all called to say YES. But we don't always respond. Mattie reminded us when he was alive and reminds us now to say YES to our Heartsong. God made us as we were meant to be. With purpose. Saying YES and loving so completely is charity, as in the theological virtue. We love God above all things for his own sake, and we love our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God. Charity upholds and purifies our human ability to love, and raises it to the supernatural perfection of divine love. [www.vatican.va]

Charity is a selfless love that simultaneously enriches oneself. And it is a love that we do not embody if we have lost our way, which is why it is a theological virtue along with faith and hope. But just because we are lost, does not mean we cannot be found. God and his love are always waiting.

The Way Home
by Mattie J.T. Stepanek -- age 5

Sometimes the way home is love.
Sometimes the way home is together.
And sometimes the way home is
Not just love,
But loving each other.
And sometimes the way home is
Not just together,
But together with other people...
People you love a lot,
People you like a lot, and
People you are friends with.
But all of the times, the way home is
Every good thing that God told us to do.
~ Hope through Heartsongs (Hyperion 2002)

St. Bartholomew Catholic Church  |  6900 River Road, Bethesda
The Mass will be live streamed via YouTube  |  Stay tuned for details

We are thrilled to be back with an in-person Mass this year - and we are excited to retain our virtual accessibility for those who live far away or cannot attend in person.

Our homilist this year is Msgr. John Enzler, in residence at St. Bartholomew's and President and CEO of Catholic Charities Archdiocese of Washington. If you know Father John, you know that he is a great example of YES. And Father John played a big part in Mattie's story. Mattie's Mom, Jeni, was being advised by doctors and others to terminate her pregnancy since disability was likely for the baby. Father John, her parish pastor at the time, gave Jeni prayerful strength as she followed her heart with a YES to God, and embraced faith and the gift of this unborn child who would be named Matthew, and known as Mattie.
#MattieQuotes

Introducing quotes by Mattie. People near and far - around the corner and around the world - find hope and inspiration in quotes they read or hear from Mattie.

The following quote is from an essay Mattie wrote when he was eight years old. He re-read the essay and others when he was 13, at Christmastime. He was searching for inspiration in writing his annual Christmas poem, and he felt that Christmas 2003 would be his last.

“Sometimes it may seem like God is not with us, or listening to us, or loving us,
especially when life seems difficult.
But God is always there for us ... yesterday, today, and tomorrow. ...
We can't just pray for things to be exactly like we want them.
We need to pray to be like God created us to be.
We are created in God's image. God is all goodness. God is great.
We, then, were created good and great. Let us remember this.

Messenger (Dutton 2009)
Spread Heartsongs for Mattie campaign

The Mattie J.T. Stepanek Guild is entering a new phase of our mission to share Mattie’s life of heroic virtue, his faith in God, and to inspire others in the Catholic faith. And fundraising will need to play a key part as we move forward.

Prayerfully consider a contribution to Mattie’s Guild.

Mattie had a profound relationship with Jesus and was in direct contact with God at an early age. Mattie believed that his purpose was to be a ‘messenger’ – shaping with words what God placed in his heart for the good of our world. Just as God formed us, Mattie said that God gave us each a Heartsong, a purpose – our reason for being.

Mattie, who lived with great suffering and financial need, was chosen by God.  His life, his story, his ministry endures.

Spread Heartsongs for Mattie and let us together continue Mattie’s ministry witnessing to the Gospel and ensuring that every one of us realizes his or her Heartsong, that we each have been put on this earth with a purpose.
