2 New (Midweek) DSD Releases

Pompou: Música Callada (Pure DSD)

Pianist Josep Colom returns to the NativeDSD Music Store with the Early Release of ‘Música Callada’ (Silent Music) in Pure DSD!

Choose options
  • Exclusive Early Release at NativeDSD Music.

  • Pure DSD Editions - Exclusively Available At NativeDSD Music.

  • Available in DSD 512 - Only At NativeDSD Music (Higher Rates Program).

Probably the most important Catalan Classical piano work, Frederic Mompou’s Música Callada, is performed on this new DSD recording by the most eminent Catalan pianist of our time, Josep Colom.

Mompou’s Música Callada is a very special, elusive work of the piano repertoire. Their pieces speak with a minimalist simplicity; as Mompou himself stated: “Its mission is to reach the profound depths of our soul and the hidden domains of the vital force our spirits. This music is silent as if heard from within.” The title refers to a poem by the Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross, who also wrote the “Cantar del alma”, the poem which Mompou set to music, and which closes this recording.

L’Homme Armé (The Armed Man)

The Norwegian Naval Forces Band (Sjoforsvarets musikkorps) perform works by Ketil Hvoslef.

Choose options
  • Early Release at NativeDSD - Ahead Of CD Release in July 2021.

  • Available in DSD 512 - Only At NativeDSD Music (Higher Rates Program).

L’ Homme Armé (The Armed Man) features works composed by Ketil Hvoslef and performed by the Norwegian Naval Forces Band (Sjoforsvarets Musikkorps) conducted by Ingar Bergby. The first track on the album – Cantus Lutra Lutra: In Memory Of A Drowned Otter – features soloists Rene Wilk on Saxophone and Craig Farr on Percussion.

The Norwegian Naval Forces’ Band (Sjoforsvarets Musikkorps) has become acquainted with Ketil Hvoslef, both as a person and as a composer, over a period of several years. This musical cooperation and these personal encounters have been invaluable for Sjoforsvarets Musikkorps.

Hvoslef’s generation is not one with a close connection to the digital world. He has only recently learned to use email. Our face-to-face meetings have given us a clear insight into his personal approach to music, as well as a richer perspective on the music than what the score alone could grant us.

9 DSD Jazz Recommendations

Brian Moura tells us:

It seems like an easy question to answer. After all, NativeDSD is known for its extensive catalog of Jazz albums in DSD with hundreds of titles available. But which ones to recommend? In answering the question, I selected 9 Jazz favorites of mine. Interestingly, all 9 of the Jazz favorites are DSD Exclusive, Not Available on SACD releases.

Here’s what I recommended – along with a few comments on why. I invite you to drop by the NativeDSD Music Store and consider these albums the next time you go DSD Jazz shopping.

NOLA: Music from New Orleans (One Microphone Recording)

Choose options

NOLA is an album that pays tribute to the Jazz music of New Orleans. It is a live, DXD recording from Sound Liaison using their One Microphone Recording technique. To ensure that the album was authentic, two members of the Red Jazz Quartet went to New Orleans to check out the Jazz scene and perform a few tunes while visiting. When you listen to NOLA you will see they nailed it. This is fine New Orleans Jazz performed by a European Jazz Quartet playing at a very high level.

Love You Madly: Live at Bubba’s by Monty Alexander

Choose options

This is an easy choice. I’ve long been a fan of Jazz pianist Monty Alexander. His unique blend of Jamaican roots and Jazz piano is very tasty. Love You Madly is a double album of Monty playing with a talented trio. It is a Live Recording made by Mack Emerman, founder of Miam’s legendary Criteria Recording Studios. The album features 90 minutes of Jazz that you will enjoy and savor.

Skylark by Mike del Ferro (2020 Solo Piano Album of the Year)

Choose options

Skylark by Mike del Ferro is another example of Jazz piano music. I was not familiar with del Ferro until the release of this album last year by Sound Liaison. Skylark features 15 tracks that include several standards. His melodic and engaging style makes Skylark a fine addition to any Jazz collection.
