Greetings Holy Spirit Parish!

Welcome to the Eighth Week of Easter and Pentecost Sunday!

We continue to pray for our parishioners and an end to the COVID pandemic.
PARISH BULLETIN
Pentecost
Pentecost marks the occasion of God sending the Holy Spirit upon Jesus’ disciples after his Resurrection. The book of Acts describes how the disciples were gathered together in one place on the day of Pentecost. The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot or the Feast of Weeks) was a day that commemorated the giving of the law to Moses, a day soon to be marked as well by the giving of the Holy Spirit.

On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit gave the disciples the strength to fulfill their commission to spread the Good News of Jesus. The Solemnity of Pentecost, which crowns and fulfills the Easter season, is a good time to pray for a deeper  indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit
The following prayer was recited by Pope Benedict XVI in a homily on November 7, 2006.

Let us invoke him
so that he will irrigate, warm and straighten,
so that he will pervade us
with the power of his sacred flame
and renew the earth.
Let us pray for his with all our hearts
at this time, in these days.
Amen.

THE SUNDAY OPPORTUNITY

In recognition of how the spiritual and emotional needs of the Catholic faithful are met in great part by the parish community gathering for Sunday Mass in church…

And in view of the ever-increasing number of parishioners who are vaccinated, and who have a holy desire to worship at Sunday Mass with others in church… But aware that social distancing in church greatly reduces the number of parishioners that can be accommodated…

Therefore, starting on 5-6 June 2021, the proverbial buck will stop with the Pastor/PLC about which COVID safety measures to practice, in consultation with staff and pastoral council, and in keeping with local ordinances.

The pandemic isn’t over.
The Pastor/PLC should proceed cautiously when relaxing the recommendations of the CDC and local public health officials, who still advise…

Social distancing, wearing a mask (especially if distancing is difficult), avoiding crowds and the hand-to-hand contact of sharing or passing things, like hymnals and the Cup.

The Pastor/PLC should publish which safety measures will be practiced after the June date, so that parishioners can make their decision about whether or not to attend.

Also on 5-6 June 2021, the dispensation will expire that excused Catholics in the Archdiocese of Dubuque from participating at Sunday Mass in church.

As the pandemic isn’t over, even without a dispensation, Catholics can still legitimately excuse themselves from Sunday Mass if they’re afraid of getting COVID, or if…

They’re frail from age or illness, or caring for someone sick, homebound, or an infant, or weather makes driving hazardous, or work and Mass schedules conflict.

In short, there is no sin in missing the Sunday obligation if you would go if you could go, but you can’t for reasons outside your control. A lot of people use the term Sunday obligation to refer to going to Mass and avoiding work, but maybe it’d be better to call it the Sunday opportunity to…

Gather together, hear the word proclaimed and explained, receive the Bread of Life, re-create ourselves by relaxing, and grow in holiness by helping the poor.

Michael O. Jackels Archbishop of Dubuque

A Note from Patrick, Director of Worship

Dear All:

I hope you and your families continue to be in good health! What a blessing to be able to come together to celebrate Mass for the Ascension of the Lord! Happy Easter, Alleluia! This coming weekend, May 22-23rd we celebrate Pentecost Sunday, the end of the Easter Season! We pray, “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest.”  Due to many ministers staying home for various legitimate health and safety reasons this means many of you are serving each week to help; please know how grateful I am for all of you who are serving every week! Moving through the Easter season there will be an ongoing number of changes to the ministries, exciting to have Cantor lead singing again!

While there are multiple options for readings and liturgy forms for Pentecost, we will be using the following form, Mass of the Day for all Saturday and Sunday Masses; Sequence will be sung by musicians at each Mass. Pentecost Sunday | USCCB

As we approach the Summer, June-August 2021, Father Steve and I would like for us to add back 1-2 Extraordinary Ministers for each Mass. Since it has been a while since we all served, we would like to host a mandatory in-service meeting for all EM's Thursday, June 3rd, at 6 PM, @ the Sacred Heart main sanctuary.

Please respond if you are willing and able to serve again, and if you are able to attend the meeting to the MSP blast I am sending. If you would still like to serve but are unable to attend, we will get you the information in another way. Patrick J. (563) 583-1709 ext.313, or my Arch-Gmail, DBQ059S@dbqarch.org. Thank you, Blessings!

It is that time again for the next schedule, Summer 2021, June-August 29th 2021 (In the request email I believe I made a mistake in asking for through August 22 and/or 29th; I am confirming through the 29th, end of August). Please send me your updates to availability via this email, the parish phone, (563) 583-1709 ext.313, or my Arch-Gmail, DBQ059S@dbqarch.org. Moving through the Summer, Ordinary Time, there will be an ongoing number of changes to the ministries and the Mass as a whole; we will always let you know if/when we make any updates.  Thank you to all who have already started sending me your schedule updates.

We will continue our modifications, additions, through the Easter season: Lector, Usher/Greeters, one cantor/ singer along with accompanist, and yes, Mass Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (1 per Mass, unless the Deacon is present then they will serve).

Also, importantly, we have added more pews in each of the churches to accommodate more people, and other factors; you will now see only 1 pew roped off in between sitting areas. Please know you are in my prayers.  Thank you all for your continued service to each of your churches and to Holy Spirit Parish!
If you are unable to make your Mass time, please click on sub request and/or let me know at least 2 days in advance. For all ministers across the board please be at least 20-30 minutes early to Mass. Especially in these trying times, thank you for all your continued service to Holy Spirit Parish. As Father Steve and I do all that we can to maintain the guidelines set forth by the Archdiocese and Archbishop Michael, we thank you for your patience and understanding!

Notes on MSP emails and App: I know there are issues with the new MSP emails; please double check all inboxes as these emails sometimes go to other inboxes. If an email is delivered to the Promotions tab, you can click and drag it to the primary inbox. Once you move one message, the others will no longer be marked as promotions so they will go to the primary inbox! The phone app has been updated! To access the updated app, volunteers should click Update for the MSP app in the App Store or Google Play and then click Open. Doing so will allow you to regain access to your account. If for any reason they do not get access, please simply close and reopen the app, or click the “reload” link if they experience an error code.

Peace in Christ,

Patrick J.

Sunday Reflection from Father Steve Garner

Reflection | Pentecost Sunday | May 23, 2021

When you speak to men and women who have served in the armed forces, one of the things that they often value about their service is the camaraderie that they shared. Those who have been in combat talk about the trust they place in fellow members of their unit, and how important it is to them that they know that someone has always “got their back”. When that trust breaks down, when another soldier does not think that he or she can count on someone else, the ability of the unit to get the job done is at risk. Commanding officers recognize the importance of unit cohesion, as they call it, and part of regular training is to develop and maintain that spirit among those who serve. That spirit, that camaraderie, is always something that many members of the service say they miss the most when they return to civilian life.

On Pentecost we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, and upon us! This Spirit of God fills us at our baptism, is confirmed in us at our confirmation, and is nourished and renewed every time we receive the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. The Spirit energizes us for our work in the world of spreading the good news of Christ. As Jesus tells us in this weekend’s Gospel, we will testify because we have been given the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father.

The gift of the Holy Spirit is what develops our “unit cohesion” as the body of Christ in this world. The Spirit unites us with Christians everywhere in one communion of love, so that we can complete our mission of bringing others to Christ. This task is so important and so demanding that we cannot do it alone. The Spirit binds us together in a community of faith so that we can be strong in this work—for it is in the Spirit that we experience that sense of union where we will know that someone has always “got our back”.

I wish everyone a blessed week!

Prayer for the week

Pentecost Sequence

Veni, Sancte Spiritus
Come, Holy Spirit, come!
And from your celestial home
Shed a ray of light divine!
Come, Father of the poor!
Come, source of all our store!
Come, within our bosoms shine.
You, of comforters the best;
You, the soul’s most welcome guest;
Sweet refreshment here below;
In our labor, rest most sweet;
Grateful coolness in the heat;
Solace in the midst of woe.
O most blessed Light divine,
Shine within these hearts of yours,
And our inmost being fill!
Where you are not, we have naught,

Nothing good in deed or thought,
Nothing free from taint of ill.
Heal our wounds, our strength renew;
On our dryness pour your dew;
Wash the stains of guilt away:
Bend the stubborn heart and will;
Melt the frozen, warm the chill;
Guide the steps that go astray.
On the faithful, who adore
And confess you, evermore
In your sevenfold gift descend;
Give them virtue’s sure reward;
Give them your salvation, Lord;
Give them joys that never end. Amen.
Alleluia.

Recent Updates & Reminders

REQUIRED for attending Mass at Holy Spirit

Masks are REQUIRED to attend Mass at Holy Spirit Parish. If you do not have a mask, there are some available at the church entrances. Also, as the number of Mass attendees increases there is a chance we may need to turn people away so as to maintain recommended social distancing guidelines.

Parish Office Closure
Due to COVID-19, the Parish Office will remain closed to walk-ins for your health and the health of our staff. We will still keep reduced office hours (8am-noon, Monday-Friday) for the time being, so if you need to speak with someone, please call 563-583-1709 and we will be happy to help!  If you have something to turn in to the office, please place it inside the front storm door at the parish office in the locked depository box on the left under the shelf. We will retrieve items during business hours.

Guidelines for Attending Mass at Holy Spirit Parish

Please review the following guidelines implemented for the celebration of public Mass until further notice.

  • All (including children) must wear masks before, during, and following Mass (while in church/parking lot areas). The CDC recommends children under the age of two do not wear a mask; please refrain from bringing children under the age of two to Mass until restrictions have been lifted.
  • Seating will be limited; please sit only in open (untaped/unroped) pews minding social distancing guidelines; please do not disturb, change placement of or remove blue tape or rope on pews
  • Once pews are filled we will be at capacity and admittance will cease, pews may not be held or saved for others
  • Families or those living in the same household may sit together in a pew; if room permits, others may enter the same pew IF proper distance is available. Families living in different households must maintain proper social distancing guidelines.
  • Church pews, handrails, kneelers, door handles, high use areas, etc. will be sanitized after each Mass
  • Holy Water fonts and cisterns will remain empty
  • Sanitizer will be available at all church entrances
  • Rest rooms (in churches) will be available and sanitized following Mass
  • Church halls (Kriebs, Terence, and Paraclete) will be CLOSED during Mass, including the rest rooms located in those halls
  • All printed materials (including the bulletins) will be removed from churches, please refer to the parish website to view the weekly bulletin
  • There will be no missalettes or music issues available for use in pews
  • Social distancing must be observed (at least six feet apart) in church and parking lot areas
  • Please refrain from singing during Mass
  • There will be no (or very limited) liturgical ministers
  • Please refrain from greeting or gathering before and/or after Mass in church and/or parking lot areas
  • There will be no collection during Mass, collection boxes will be placed at church entrances
  • There will be no offertory/gift procession
  • Please avoid physical contact during the Our Father and Sign of Peace
  • Only the Precious Body will be offered at Communion and placed only in the hand (not on the tongue)
  • There will be no distribution of the Precious Blood
  • Priests will bring Communion to the people in the pews and adjust if need be as we proceed.
Please keep in mind these other important points when considering attending Mass:
  1. The coronavirus is still with us. Following social distancing guidelines in regard to gathering for a liturgy or a devotional in church will result in less space, reducing greatly the number of people who can attend.
  2. Dispensation from the obligation to participate in Sunday Mass and holy days will be lifted the weekend of June 5-6, 2021.
  3. Please refrain from attending if you are sick, were recently sick (in the past 14 days), or have an underlying medical condition; or, if you are concerned about contracting COVID-19 or live with or care for someone who is at higher risk due to underlying medical conditions or advanced age, or is sick. Additionally, those who are frail due to advanced age, are under the age of two, and those who work in a high risk profession should abstain from attending Mass.
  4. Daily Mass will be offered each day (regular schedule) with the same restrictions.
