During the monthly Downtown Parking Operations meeting last week City representatives confirmed that the road narrowing project on the 400 block of Hay was to begin yesterday (it did). Although allowances are being made for residents and employees along that block, the street will be fully closed and traffic rerouted for most, if not all, of the planned project. Completion is still expected to be May 28, in time for Memorial Day weekend. We confirmed that the sidewalks will remain open to pedestrians throughout the project.
The detour route is via Ray, Franklin, and Winslow.
Ebony McNeil with Republic Parking updated the group on plans for paid street parking. The July 1 go-live date is still in place and enforcement hours will remain from 9am - 9pm Monday through Friday. Approximately 2 weeks prior to this, the City will install 2 large mobile message signs announcing the start of paid parking. They'll initially set them up on Hay and Gillespie Streets, then relocate them during this time to appear on each impacted street. City Engineering will hit the ground running to swap out existing parking info signs. It was noted that handicap parking will not be exempt from paid street parking. This was emphasized because they’ve essentially been exempt from the parking time limits. ParkMobile will provide additional signage regarding how and where to pay.
She also reported that the first event parking date went smoothly other than lines at the new kiosks. Staff were on hand in the lots to assist visitors with the new process and to recommend and help download the mobile parking app, ParkMobile, which allows virtual payment.
The City has instructed that event parking rates will not be in effect during the Big South Tournament, May 27 - 29.
And finally, it was stressed that event parking lots will be 100% paid through the kiosks and app. There will be no parking attendants in these lots during major events. If you observe anyone attempting to collect money from event attendees, please call 911 to report it.
