Cooksey Shares Latest Lessons Learned for Strategic Communications

Through Cooksey’s extensive history advising government entities and private sector clients, our team has developed broad expertise in designing multi-level communication strategies that earn trust and demonstrate effective, consistent best practices.

Here are the top five lessons we’ve learned from various clients’ communications audits, prominent crises and a recent public safety recruitment campaign:

  1. Gain upfront stakeholder engagement: Before creating new communications plans, speak with (and listen to!) diverse groups of key stakeholders, both internally and externally, to help shape messaging and understand different perspectives. Case study example: City of Georgetown.
  2. Form customized goals and objectives: No city or organization is alike, so no communications plan can be cookie-cutter. Be sure your plan is tailored to the competitive marketplace, the organization’s specific strategic needs and its long-term goals. Case study examples: City of Lewisville and City of Sachse.
  3. Capture community insight: Employ professionally administered survey and focus group methodologies to learn the unique needs, concerns and desires of community residents before asking for support at the ballot box. Case study examples: City of Cedar Park and Port Freeport.
  4. Prepare for crises: Inevitably, crises happen to all businesses, cities and organizations. Form an action plan and train spokespeople who can easily share your communication messaging while thoughtfully responding to stakeholder concerns. Case study examples: City of Richardson and City of Plano.
  5. Start a dialogue on social issues: Think about appropriate ways to proactively open dialogue between your team and your stakeholders on current social issues. By actively listening and discussing these issues, you can demonstrate understanding and mitigate issues before reputational threats come along.
