Trail work, fun continues at Spence Mountain

By Lee Juillerat for the Herald and News, April 29, 2021

What do the crews building new trails at Spence Mountain do when their day is done?

Hop on their mountain bikes and ride the trails they’ve built in previous years and test the new trails they crafted that day.

Moore Park Bike Skills Area Coming Soon

Exciting things are about to happen in Moore Park!

Recently the City awarded Dirt Mechanics LLC the contract to design and build a bike skills area in Moore Park this summer.  The idea for the skills area came from the Moore Park Trails Master Plan completed in 2018.

The skills area will feature three zones of varying difficulty to provide a safe learning environment for families, youth and those new to the sport of mountain biking.

Zone 1 will feature three downhill skills trails and an uphill climbing route for repetitive laps.  Trails will have undulating terrain with rollers, banked corners and features such as rocks, ladder bridges and small jumps that will increase in size as you go up in difficulty level.   Zone 2 is a practice area with progressive drop zones by difficulty level.  Zone 3 is a Family Zone so groups can gather at a central point.  A small strider pump track and skills area in the family zone will keep the little ones occupied.

A positive experience at the bike skills area will help users gain confidence to explore trails further into Moore Park and the surrounding area.

2021 Klamath Trails Challenge

Healthy Klamath is kicking off the 2021 Klamath Trails Challenge on May 29th!

The purpose of the challenge is to encourage folks to get out and explore our beautiful trails whether it be by walking, hiking, running or biking.

Ten local trails are featured.  Participants will have 14 weeks to complete a Passport in order to qualify for various prizes.

Ready, set…. GO!

Grant Awarded to Repair Fire Damaged Trails

Don Boyd, representing Klamath Community Foundation (KCF) in partnership with the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust, presents a check to Drew Honzel (KTA).  Grant funds will be used to repair and rebuild trails that were damaged by the Spence Mountain fire last summer.

Professional contractors are just completing the project so funds are very timely and needed.  We are very appreciative of Heidi Biggs, Don Boyd and Bob Kingzett from KCF and special thanks to the MJ Murdock Charitable Trust for making this grant possible!

Trail Maintenance

Volunteer hours for April totaled 39 hours last month.

Highlights for April:
Moore Park - 17 hrs, tread work, installed signs
Spence Mtn - 10 hrs, fire rehab, noxious weeds, litter
Brown Mt Area - 12 hrs, logging out fall down

Please post maintenance hours in our Trail Work Log. Include drive time to and from the trail location. This helps us track volunteer hours and is especially important when applying for grants as it shows community support!

If you want to get involved in trail maintenance we post group events on our Meet-up site.

Fred Meyer's Community Rewards & AmazonSmile Helps KTA!

If you shop at Fred Meyer or Amazon you could be helping KTA with your purchases. There are “no strings attached” other than having to set-up an online account if you don’t have one.
A frequently asked question about the Fred Meyer charity program is whether you lose your reward points by naming a charity.  The simple answer is NO. Here is a link to the frequently asked questions and information on how to link your rewards card.

AmazonSmile is also simple to set-up. Follow this link to support of Klamath Trails Alliance or this link for more information.  With Amazon you will need to place your order on the AmazonSmile site in order in to generate contributions back to KTA.
