On May 28, celebrate the power of dance from coast-to-coast-to-coast with NBS Sharing Dance Day 2021!

The universal language of dance has the unique ability to bring together people of all ages and abilities, in communities across the country, through a mutual love of movement. That’s why, on May 28 at 12:30pm ET, Canada’s National Ballet School (NBS) will host its 2021 Sharing Dance Day event as a digital broadcast across Canada. NBS’ annual Sharing Dance Day events have become a joyful symbol and celebration of connectedness and community through dance, from coast-to-coast-to-coast, engaging more than 123,000 people in the last five years.

“This past year has underscored the enduring power of dance, and just how much we need this art form to flourish as individuals and celebrate as communities,” says Mavis Staines, Artistic Director and CEO at Canada’s National Ballet School. “Despite ongoing public health challenges and continued need for physical distancing in many parts of Canada, I believe the digital format of our event will reinforce the strength we derive from our sense of community, particularly during times of hardship.”

NBS Sharing Dance Day 2021 will feature workshops in a diversity of dance styles—get ready to dance along! The broadcast will also premiere a special collaborative collage video featuring the NBS Sharing Dance Choreography and video submissions from dancers across the country.

Dance workshops will include:

  • Powwow and Indigenous Hoop Dance with Shanley Spence
  • Afro-Contemporary with Aïcha Bastien N'Diaye
  • Bharatanatyam with Nivedha Ramalingam
  • Bollywood with Rohan D'Silva
  • Improvisation with Rena Narumi
  • ExplorAbility for Adults with Jacqui Ladwig
  • Jazz with Tyler Hall

This 2021 Sharing Dance Day broadcast is hosted by Canada’s National Ballet School, and programmed in partnership with Arts Umbrella, L'École de danse de Québec, Halifax Dance, and Canada’s Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) School.

We hope you will join us on May 28 as we come together in joy, creativity and community. No dance experience is required! Click below to watch the NBS Sharing Dance Day 2021 trailer and learn more about how to tune in.
