To get the best performances out of artists and musicians, I need connection.
I can phone the production in, and they can play by numbers, but what brings out a superior performance, is wanting the best from, and for, each other.
Sometimes, I need to proffer uncomfortable perspectives about their performance or writing. Sometimes they need to push back if the session is not yielding the artistic results they desire.
This rub of tension generates the difference between an ok recording and a record that reflects collaborative excellence.
Sometimes we have to forgo comfort for connection.
The stimulus to let go of comfort for the sake of connection is desire. Desire to be more than whom we'll be if unconnected.
Alignment is seldom instantaneous.
Connection requires presence, perseverance and practice.
With the artists and musicians I've worked with for decades I've seen it over and over again. Those who desire to be better at their craft avail themselves of constructive, creative connection. It's hard, tiresome and uncomfortable work, yet desire not only pulls them along, but it also pulls them through it.
'Connection' needs healthy practice.
Neurologically, consciously repeated behaviors or beliefs slowly pattern their way into our subconscious mind, manifesting themselves not only through our art-making, but in our lives as well.
Comfort keeps us where we are, in what is known. Unlike comfort, connection takes risk, forgoing the known for the unknown, stepping into the possibility of what can be, be it relational or artistic.
Connection though, if purposely possessed – will dissipate.
Connection is an ephemeral guest to be delighted in, let go of and.. pursued again.
Step into possibility.
Connection over comfort.
