About the Award
Since it was established in 1994, the RBC Bronwen Wallace Award has recognized 84 emerging writers, many of whom have gone on to receive literary acclaim. Past winners include Michael Crummey, Alissa York, Sonnet L’Abbé, Alison Pick, Marjorie Celona, Noor Naga, and Maria Reva.
“We are immensely proud to partner with RBC to present a prize that has become widely regarded in the literary community as a launching pad to a successful career,” said Charlie Foran, executive director, Writers’ Trust. “The alteration to this year’s prize criteria — to include all eligible applicants irrespective of age — is long overdue and an acknowledgement that the gestation period for an artist has no timeline, that literary talent can bloom at any age.”
About Bronwen Wallace
Bronwen Wallace was a poet, short story writer, and mentor to many young authors as a creative writing instructor at Queen’s University and St. Lawrence College in Kingston. This prize was established in her honour in 1994 by a group of friends and colleagues. Wallace felt that writers should have more opportunities for recognition early in their careers, and so this annual award is given to a writer who has published poetry or prose in a literary magazine or anthology, but has not yet been published in book form.
About the RBC Emerging Artists Project
The RBC Bronwen Wallace Award is sponsored by RBC Emerging Artists Project, which helps artists bridge the gap from emerging to established, and supports organizations that provide the best opportunities to advance artists’ careers. Since 2015, more than 24,000 artists have been supported through these programs.
