New SEND Online Safety Hub

NetAware have recently launched a new hub for parents of children with special educational needs, to support families with keeping their children safe online and to get the best out of their online experiences. 
 
The new hub includes top tips, activities and guidance. You can also sign up for a regular newsletter.

New Online Safety Bill

This month, the UK government published a new draft Online Safety Bill, designed to 'protect children online and tackle some of the worst abuses on social media, including racist hate crimes.'

The Bill includes a number of new laws, including:
  • Social media sites, websites, apps and other services hosting user-generated content or allowing people to talk to others online must remove and limit the spread of illegal and harmful content such as child sexual abuse, terrorist material and suicide content.

  • Ofcom will be given the power to fine companies failing in a new duty of care up to £18 million or ten per cent of annual global turnover, whichever is higher, and have the power to block access to sites.

Online Safety Incidents: Updated Flowchart

We have just published the latest update to our Online Safety Incident Flowchart which supports schools in decision making when Online Safety Incidents arise. This chart is free for all schools and can be printed for display in key areas at school. The flowchart is designed to work alongside school policies to support staff in developing a consistent approach to dealing with Online Safety incidents. Pupil Voice: Updated Pupil Surveys


Our free ActiveBYTE pupil surveys for EYFS, KS1 and KS2 have been updated & are a great way to start conversations with your pupils about their use of technology. They can help teachers to ensure that they are aware of trends in their class, and support staff in delivering Online Safety lessons which are relevant to their pupils. New DfE Guidance: Safeguarding and Remote Education

The DfE has just updated its guidance for how to follow safeguarding procedures when planning remote education strategies and teaching remotely. 
This includes:
  • Safeguarding pupils and teachers online
  • Reporting concerns
  • Online safety advice for parents and carers
  • Virtual lessons and live streaming
  • Providing pastoral care remotely
  • Personal data and GDPR

360 Safe Workshops 2021-22

New for 2021-22, our termly 360 degree safe online workshops will provide an opportunity for schools to spend a focused afternoon using the free tool to review their Online Safety provision, with peer support and discussion with colleagues in other schools. An eLIM advisor, who is an accredited 360 safe assessor, will lead the workshop and be available to answer questions and offer guidance.
 

 These online workshops are £40 per school and schools can choose to attend as many of these workshops as they like.

Cyber Security: New Barefoot Computing Resources

Barefoot Computing's new Cyber Security resources for Primary schools are designed to not only teach pupils to protect themselves from cyber crime, but also understand what is legal and what is illegal online, to help them avoid committing cyber crime themselves. The lessons also cover possible careers in Cyber Security, to provide aspiration for children who are particularly interested in this area of Digital Literacy.

Free lesson plans and activities are available for ages 6-7, 7-9 and 9-11, as well as a game called 'The Phisherman' which teaches pupils how to recognise the signs of phishing.

Online Hate: New Childnet resources for secondary schools

Childnet have launched a new set of resources for secondary schools. 'Talk it over' is:
'A research-led resource designed to support educators in facilitating empathetic, honest, and evidence-based conversations on online hate and how to tackle it with secondary aged pupils.'

The resource covers four areas:
  1. Understanding Online Hate
  2. Examining the Impact
  3. Responding and Reporting
  4. Embracing Difference
Statistics, discussion questions and activities are supported by educator guidance and a glossary. Find the full resource at:

Computing and Online Safety Leaders Network Meetings

Our termly Network Meetings for Computing and Online Safety Leads are a chance to meet with colleagues from across Somerset and beyond to discuss effective approaches to these subjects. The eLIM Education Technology advisors will provide the latest updates and guidance to develop your expertise as the leader of Computing and Online Safety in your school. These online meetings are free to attend with a purchase of any eLIM package and dates for 2021-22 are now available to book. (Meetings will be held over Microsoft Teams.)
