This Sunday, May 23rd, is Pentecost Sunday which is traditionally the celebration of the giving of the Spirit to the disciples and birth of Christ’s church on earth.  On that day we celebrate how the Spirit empowered all the disciples to go into the world and witness to God’s saving action in Christ for them and the world.  We, the church, are the results of that miracle.  But Pentecost Sunday is more than just remembering a beginning.  It is also affirming that in the Spirit, we are the ones who are now carrying on the mission and ministry of Christ’s church.

Sometimes the burden of the mission of the church wears us out, drags us down or simply overwhelms us to inaction.  It is in these times we remind ourselves that the Spirit is also Life.  She is the power behind our daily resurrection that renews our hope and our strength.  As Paul writes: “So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!”

May the Spirit surprise you today with the fire of new Life and the power that only hope can give.
Peace,
Pr. Scot

Exuberant Spirit of God,
bursting with the brightness of flame
into the coldness of our lives
to warm us with a passion for justice and beauty,
we praise you.

Exuberant Spirit of God,
sweeping us out of the dusty corners of our apathy
to breathe vitality into our struggles for change,
we praise you.

Exuberant Spirit of God,
speaking words that leap over barriers of mistrust
to convey messages of truth and new understanding,
we praise you.

Exuberant Spirit of God,
flame
                wind
                                speech,
burn, breathe, speak in us;
fill your world with justice and with joy.

Invitation to Prayer
I never intended that this much time would go by before offering an additional opportunity to learn more about prayer.  Today, I invite you again to “Come and See” as we pray together with Sacred Scripture.  Beginning on Wednesday, May 19th, for six weeks we will practice together the prayer practice of Lectio Divina.  The format for this will be to experience this ancient prayer practice.  Join me while we listen to God speak as we savor Sacred Text in this unique way.  Praying through Scripture enables us to cultivate, through Lectio, the capacity to listen deeply for God in the whole of life.  I look forward to praying together.

Beginning Wednesday, May 19, 2021
From 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Ending June 30, 2021

If you are interested, contact Betty Hinkelman.. If you would like to join in the prayer but the time slot is not working for you, let me know as well.
