Costume Design Workshop and Presentation To Take Place at the ND Heritage Center

BISMARCK, N.D. – The public is invited to join a free costume design workshop and presentation by Camilla Morrison June 5-6. Morrison is a costume designer and North Dakota Council on the Arts fellowship recipient.

On Saturday, June 5, 10:30 a.m.-4 p.m., the workshop "Storytelling through Costume Design" will instruct participants on how to tell their story through the art of costume design. A demonstration will show how a personal story can be translated into an avant-garde costume. Participants will get help to brainstorm a story and design their own costume. Registration is required for the workshop. There will be a break for lunch on your own.

On Sunday, June 6, at 2 p.m., Morrison will give a presentation titled “Of the Earth: Stories of Women in North Dakota.” Witness Morrison's unique design process as it explores themes of womanhood, such as ageing, motherhood, joy, and sadness. Morrison will share costumes custom-created with painting and dyeing techniques that blend visual art and costume design.

Both programs are related to the temporary exhibit "Fashion & Function: North Dakota Style," which showcases the everyday fashions of North Dakotans shaped by elements such as weather, career choices, cultural traditions, available resources, and pop culture.

These programs are part of the State Historical Society of North Dakota's Special Saturdays and Sensational Sundays series. Special Saturdays and Sensational Sundays are free cultural programs that include a variety of lectures, concerts, movies, and tours. This costume design workshop and presentation are supported in part by a grant from the North Dakota Council on the Arts, which receives funding from the state Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts.

The North Dakota Heritage Center & State Museum is open Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m., and Saturday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, contact Erik Holland, curator of education, at 701.328.2792. Find a calendar of upcoming State Historical Society events at history.nd.gov/events.
