Skill Development Events & Career Opportunities

It seems like biosketch formats are constantly shifting and changing. If these changes confuse you, perhaps it's time to attend "How to Write Your NIH Biosketch Using the New Format", a workshop at 11 am on May 20th.


Want to do some science outside of academia? Check out the "Preparing Scientists for Industry Careers: Career Development Workshop" There will be workshops hosted on May 11th and 14th. Registration is 100% free.
Sloan Kettering is accepting applications for their free yearly Academic Job Search Bootcamp. It is similar to the UW Future Faculty Fellows Workshop series, with the added bonus of being able to network outside of UW. The application submission deadline is 9 pm on May 21st.
Do you want to strategize for the next steps of your career? Come to a brief info-session Wednesday, May 12th at 12:30 pm to hear about the PhD Career Ladder Program (PCLP), a new career development opportunity coming to UW. There is a new Postdoctoral Scholar Training Specialist position available under the Empowering Prevention and Inclusive Communities (EPIC) program. The EPIC program is jointly developed through a collaboration between UAW-4121 and UW. EPIC trains academic student employees and postdocs to prevent of sexual harassment. This program is supervised by SafeCampus, University of Washington's Violence Prevention and Response Program, and the position will report to the Prevention, Education, & Communications Manager in SafeCampus.
Going Public 2021 - This event explores the overlap between research, activism, and advocacy with a special focus on building trust with communities outside the university. Join for two days of talks with community leaders and researchers as well as practical workshops that will help you build skills to create social change through advocacy, engage with a broader audience, and showcase the importance of community-engaged research. Predatory Journals - What makes a publisher predatory? Have you ever been invited to submit papers to random journals outside your field that you've never heard of? Science News writer Adam Ruben recently asked on social media whether any scientists had stories to share about their own forays into the world of bogus journals. The responses ... surprised him.

Grant, Fellowship, and Award Opportunities

The Momental Foundation - Mistletoe Research Fellowship. The application deadline is Friday, June 4, 2021


The Washington Research Foundation - Postdoc fellowship This fellowship provides 3 years of support for postdocs in STEM fields who received their PhD on or after July 1st 2020. Zoom info sessions on May 14th and June 8th. Application deadline is the end of the day on June 27, 2021


Have experiences to write about? How about submitting your story for a Science & SciLifeLab Prize for Young Scientists? If were awarded a PhD between 1/1/2019 and 12/31/2020, you are invited to submit a 1000-word essay about your graduate student research (in one of four eligible subject tracks) by July 15, 2021. The Grand Prize is $30,000 USD and the three other category winners are awarded $10,000 each. The grand prize-winning essay will be published in Science and essays from the three category winners will be published online. Winners will be invited to Sweden in December 2021 to participate in a unique week filled with events in honor of science. More information and the Entry Form are here.
