 Council plans on exhibition

We’re calling on residents to provide feedback on our draft Operational Plan, Delivery Program and Budget.

These plans are prepared each year and detail our proposed works and activities for the year ahead with the aim of addressing the objectives and priorities as identified in our Community Strategic Plan, Wingecarribee 2031.

Help shape the future of our Shire and have your say by Friday 11 June 2021.

You’re also invited to attend one of our upcoming drop-in sessions.

What is environmental DNA (eDNA)?

  Platypus DNA detected in Joadja

Earlier this year our Environment and Sustainability team undertook water and soil sampling along the Wingecarribee River in the hope of identifying the presence of one of our most iconic Australian animals, the platypus.

The platypus can be an elusive critter that is difficult to monitor due to their shyness, elusiveness and nocturnal feeding habits.  Six sites around Bowral, Glenquarry and Joadja were sampled using Environmental DNA (eDNA) testing and we’re pleased to report that all three Joadja locations returned a positive result!

eDNA testing is an unobtrusive survey tool used to evaluate the presence or absence of a certain protected species. Watch the video above for more information.

Together with community reports of platypus sightings, our hope is to improve our understanding of this iconic species.

Lending a paw to break down reading barriers

Mr Gambler the schnauzer has recently been enjoying some time at Bowral Library lending a paw to boost children’s reading confidence.

The Paws 'n' Tales reading program is for children aged 4 to 6 years. It aims to boost reading skills and confidence in a relaxed environment.

Volunteers and specially trained dogs spend time reading with children every Tuesday afternoon during the school term at Bowral Library.

The program is free for library members and is proudly supported by the Friends of Wingecarribee Libraries.

 Traffic study underway

We’re conducting a traffic study to better understand how local roads are being used across the Wingecarribee Shire.

Road tubes and sensors are being installed at 125 locations to monitor traffic patterns and help us prioritise future works and projects.

Once the equipment is set up, it will remain on site for approximately two weeks before moving on to the next location. The entire project is expected to be complete by early August.

Information gathered will be analysed and used to model traffic flow simulation.

While no traffic interruptions are expected, we remind motorists to keep an eye out and exercise care when travelling through work zones.
