Reconciliation Week and Mabo Day

On the last day of Reconciliation Week and to celebrate Mabo Day (the anniversary of the High Court of Australia’s 1992 judgement on native title), EveryMan commemorated the courageous efforts of Eddie Koiki Mabo to overturn the fiction of terra nullius (land belonging to no one).

This year EveryMan embraced this year's Reconciliation Week theme: 'More than a word. Reconciliation takes action' with our clients, their families, and other services we work closely with.

Other community organisations that helped celebrate on the morning included Toora Women Inc., Legal Aid ACT, Domestic Violence Crisis Service ACT, Victim Support and City Mental Health. Together we all participated in the Collaborative Hands workshop, run by Burrunju Aboriginal Corporation (Burrunju Art Gallery).

Men's Health Week

International Men's Health Week will be held from 13-19 June. It is an important opportunity to highlight men's health and what it means to be healthy.

Through a series of promotions, events and publicity around the country, Men's Health Week is designed to provoke thought and discussion about what needs to be done to improve male health.

We encourage everyone to get involved in supporting initiatives and promotions that aim to make the lives of boys and men better.

See what you made me do

The hard hitting book See What You Made Me Do has been turned into a 3 part SBS docuseries.

In Australia, almost 17 per cent of women over the age of fifteen (one in six) have been abused by an intimate partner. In the confronting and deeply researched account, journalist Jess Hill uncovers the ways in which abusers exert control in the darkest and most intimate ways imaginable. The questions are asked: What do we know about perpetrators? Why is it so hard to leave? What does successful intervention look like?

What emerges is not only a searing investigation of the violence so many women experience, but a dissection of how that violence can be enabled and reinforced by the judicial system we trust to protect us.

Topic Tuesday

The next Topic Tuesday Forum will cover the topic: Employment and Mental Health.

Employment and work when living with complex mental health concerns can be a big part of recovery and wellbeing for many people. But, for many others there are barriers to finding mentally healthy workplaces.

We encourage staff and service users to join the conversation to discuss the ins and outs of employment and mental health. The online forum is free, confidential and a safe space for you to discuss barriers that you might be facing, within a community group that cares.
