Assalamu alaykum,

We have 7 updates to share with you in today's newsletter:

(1) Eid Announcement: The Council of Imams has announced that Eid ul-Fitr will be on Thursday, May 13.

(2) Eid Guidelines & Recommendations: The Council of Imams of Ottawa-Gatineau has issued an important statement for how families can observe the Eid prayers.

(3) Eid Message & Greetings: we will be releasing an Eid message from our Imam and Board on Thursday morning.

(4) Zakat Reminder: Those looking to pay their Zakat ul-Fitr can do so online or in person.

(5) AMA Volunteer Recognition: We wanted to highlight the work of our volunteers who have tirelessly contributed to the community throughout Ramadan.

(6) Eid Loot Bags Drive Thru: Your masjid wants to remain connected to you through Eid ul-Fitr. Let's celebrate a socially distanced Eid together!

(7) Virtual Eid ul-Fitr Activities: We are preparing a fun, new experience for you and your family so you can celebrate Eid safely!

(7A) Eid Community Greetings: Join your friends and fellow community members only in extending Eid greetings and socializing at AMA’s virtual Eid ul-Fitr gathering.

(7B) Islamic Family Trivia: Compete in our Islamic Trivia contest as a family! Top scorers win prizes.

(7C) Eid Cultural Dress Competition: Every Eid we take pride in wearing our best clothes. For this Eid we want to keep that spirit alive with a Cultural Dress Competition for women, youth and children.

(7D) Kids & Youth Art Competition: Celebrate Eid by taking part in an art competition for kids and youth and win prizes.

#1. Eid Announcement from the Council of Imams of Ottawa-Gatineau

Based on the moon sighting information consistent with the global moon sighting criterion, the Council of Imams of Ottawa-Gatineau hereby confirms that there were no credible moon sighting reports on Tuesday, 29th Ramadan (2021-05-11) as such we will complete 30 days for Ramadan.

Accordingly, the first of Shawwal will be on May 13, 2021 and we will celebrate Eidul Fitr this Thursday In Sha’ā Allah.

#2. Eid Guidelines & Recommendations 

In light of the present lockdown, the restriction to assemble due to public safety, and with the intention to raise the morale of our community The Council of Imams of Ottawa-Gatineau has decided to provide the community with some guidelines and recommendations regarding the upcoming Eidul Fitr Prayer (Salah).

These guidelines include:
  • How to offer the Eid prayers at home
  • The sunnahs and etiquettes of the day of Eid 
  • Importance of greetings others 
  • ...and more

#3. Eid Message & Greetings from our Imam & Board

On the morning of Eid (Thursday, May 13) we will be publishing two videos on our YouTube channel for our community:

#4. Reminder to Give Zakat ul-Fitr ($10)

This is a reminder for those who wish to pay their Zakat ul-mal or Zakat ul-fitr online. You can use the links below to donate.

The amount for Zakat ul-fitr is $10 per person.
Give Your Zakat ul-Fitr ($10 per person)
You can also donate in person any day of the week between 12:00 PM and 7:30 PM.

Please call us at (613) 523-9977 ext 222 when you arrive so our team member can open the door for you.

#5. AMA Volunteer Recognition

We are grateful to our volunteers for the on-going support they offer to the community. The efforts of our volunteers do not go unnoticed, and we wanted to share the fruits of their labour this Ramadan with our congregants and community members.

#6. Eid Loot Bags Drive Thru

Eid ul-Fitr is almost upon us. And while we cannot pray together in the Masjid, or otherwise gather as a community, we can have a socially distanced Eid celebration, and that is exactly what we have in store for you!

Dress up in your Eid clothes and visit us at Masjid ar-Rahmah where you can collect Eid loots bags for children (12 and under).

Here are the details:

Date: Thursday, May 13 (even if Eid is announced for Wednesday, the loot bag event will still remain on Thursday)

Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM or until supplies last

Location: AMA Centre (1216 Hunt Club Rd.)

We encourage everyone to follow these guidelines:

  • As per the province-wide restrictions, the masjid will remain closed. No one is allowed to enter the mosque for prayers or any other reasons.
     
  • This is a drive thru event only where all interactions with be curb-side and contactless.

  • In order to minimize the traffic and to keep everyone safe, we are asking everyone attending the event to remain seated in their cars at all time.

  • Please do not hold up the traffic and follow the instructions of the volunteers on-site to manage the traffic.

  • If someone would like to make a donation, we will have a separate donation booth where volunteers will assist you. Again, we request you to remain seated in your cars.

  • We highly encourage the use of face masks when dealing with our volunteers.

#7. Virtual Eid ul-Fitr Activities

Your masjid misses you! And although we cannot celebrate Eid together during the lockdown, we have planned a host of virtual events so we can celebrate Eid at home together.

To spread the Eid cheer, we have planned events for the whole family! We encourage you to dress up and join our virtual programs which include:

  3. Eid Community Greetings
  4. Family Islamic Trivia
  5. Kids & Youth Art Competition

#7A. Eid Community Greetings

As we prepare to celebrate the end of Ramadan with prayer, fasts and charity, our hearts long to see our friends and family for Eid. 

Want to see all your friends and community members on Eid? At AMA, we hope to unite our community through virtual Eid ul-Fitr Community Greetings hosted on Zoom! 

We will host a total of 4 virtual gatherings for various audiences so you can meet and greet your friends in leisure:
  • Male (Youth & Adults)
  • Female (Youth & Adults)
  • Male Converts
  • Female Converts

#7B. Family Islamic Trivia

Get ready for our Family Islamic Trivia contest this Eid ul-Fitr! For our trivia contest using Kahoot, the entire family can participate as ONE team.

The Kahoot will open on Thursday, May 13 at 6:00 PM and will be closed on Thursday, May 13 at 7:00 PM.

The stakes are high and competition is stiff! Here are more details:

Date: Thursday, May 13

Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Location: Online via Zoom

Who can register? Only one member from the family is required to register. He / she will receive the Zoom link via email

Who can participate? There is no age-limit and all family members are encouraged to join as one team. As a team you can attempt the quiz only ONCE

Winners Announcement: Winners will be announced on Tuesday, May 18, through the newsletter

Registration Deadline: 5:45 PM on Thursday, May 13

Further Details: The link to the Kahoot will be sent out at 6:00 PM on Thursday, May 13, during the Zoom call. Please download the Kahoot app and/or familiarize yourself with the web application beforehand

#7C. Eid Cultural Dress Competition

Every Eid we take pride in wearing our best clothes. For this Eid we want to keep that spirit alive with a cultural dress competition.

This is a competition to see who will be the best dressed person and is open to children and women. Your pictures will be viewed and judged to win some great prizes from AMA!

Age Categories

There will be prizes for 3 age groups:

  • Toddlers (Under 6)
  • Children (7 - 12)
  • Adults (13+)

How to Join the Competition

(Step 1) Use the correct link below to share a picture of yourself in your traditional Eid outfit.

(Step 2) Use the + icon in the bottom right corner to upload your Eid outfit.

  • In the note for your picture upload please include your name and email address so we can contact you if you are a winner.
Deadline to Submit Your Photo: You have until 11:59 PM on Saturday, May 15 to submit your cultural dress picture online using the link below. We will announce the winners on Tuesday, May 18 through our email newsletter.
 

Please ensure you select the correct link to submit your photo.

#7D. Kids & Youth Art Competition

Celebrate Eid by taking part in an art competition for kids and youth for both boys and girls.

There will be prizes for 3 age groups:
  • 4 to 7 years old
  • 8 to 11 years old
  • 12 to 15 years old
You will need to create a piece of art that will be reviewed by our judges.

Guidelines for Submitting Your Art
  • The piece of art you create can be a drawing or a painting. It can also be a picture of the beautiful decoration of your home or of your car to show the spirit of Eid
  • It will need to be an original design (do not copy others). It needs to be Islamically appropriate
How to Join the Competition

(Step 1) Create your original piece of art.

(Step 2): Take a picture of your art and email it to sisters@mymasjid.ca with the subject line “Eid Art Competition.”

Please remember to include these details in your email:
  • Your age
  • Your full name
  • Your phone number so we can contact you if you are a winner
DeadlineYou have until 11:59 PM on the third day of Eid to submit your artwork.

We will announce the winners on Tuesday, May 18.
