Town wins Waste Innovation of the Year Award

The Town is proud to announce our Pool Blanket Recycling Program has won the Waste Innovation of the Year at the 2021 WasteSorted Awards!

After more than a year of research and collaboration with Green Machines Lab, Poly Pipe Recycling and Aussie Pool Covers, the Town devised a system to collect cast-off pool covers and recycle them into useful products.

The initiative is believed to be the first of its kind in Australia and was the idea of the Town's Waste Minimisation Officer, Carey Wright. The Town was up against other great waste initiatives from the Department of Finance and private companies.

The Town has now hosted two Pool Blanket Drop-Off Days and has received over 100 blankets to be recycled. So far, pool blankets have been turned into products including builders' film and wheel stops for use in car parks.

The Town will be hosting its next Pool Cover Drop-Off Day on Saturday 18 September from 10am - 2pm at the Town's Administration Centre Car Park, 1 Bold Park Drive, Floreat.

Bold Park Aquatic Centre wins Gold Waterwise Award

The Bold Park Aquatic Centre, has been recognised for its commitment to water saving and innovative management at the Waterwise Awards presented by Minister Dave Kelly MLA  this week.

This is the first time aquatic centres have been recognised at the event.

The Town was also recognised for reaching the 10-year milestone as an official Waterwise Council.

In recognition for the achievement the Town has received a new park bench made from sustainably sourced and recycled timber and plastic.

The Town is planning on installing the W.A made and designed bench near the playground at Perry Lakes East in Floreat.

And Still There Are More Awards

The awards kept flowing this week with another two being collected before the week was out-this time for playground design innovation.

The Town of Cambridge was given the honour of hosting the Parks & Leisure Australia (W.A) annual awards night at one of the state's best 'parks', the Wembley Golf Course on Wednesday, 12 May.

The host Council took out the 2021 Region Award for Excellence for a playspace constructed for less than $500,000 for its new City Beach playground.

The immensely popular space is nestled into the slope between the upper and lower oval at City Beach and features twin embankment racing slides, nest swing and a little library painted by City Beach Primary School. The materials used include power poles recycled from the Towns underground power program donated by Western Power and sections of the Happy Tree to create a circle of logs for reading the Happy Tree story and other books donated by the public.

As the state winner, the City Beach playspace is now entered into the national awards to be presented in Sydney in September.

The Floreat Beach playground, featuring the 'Kracken' sea creature, was Highly Commended  in the same category to round out a very successful night and week for the Town of Cambridge.

Cambridge Local Planning Strategy gets Tick of Approval

The Town has laid down its future blue-print to keep its enviable lifestyle while still addressing the pressures of metropolitan population growth with its recently endorsed Local Planning Strategy.

The project commenced in February 2016 and involved three rounds of engagement with the community, receiving more than 1,600 submissions to help formulate the strategy.

Eight key strategic themes are encompassed in the strategy with objectives and actions assigned to each. One of the key objectives is addressing the State Governments Perth @ 3.5 million population dwelling target for the Town of 6,830 dwellings, under a 'lower growth estimate'.

The strategy also aims to have all residential dwellings within a five-minute walk from public open space, with 94.9 per cent of the Town's dwellings already meeting this target.

The Local Planning Strategy is available for viewing on the Town's website.

Since the opening of Bob Hawke College, the number of students crossing in this area has, and will continue to increase. To assist in the safety of pedestrians and drivers, the Town has begun installing a crossing point.

The crossing is due to be completed in the coming weeks, with traffic management currently in place to minimise disruption for surrounding residents.
