After a pre-season of dry weather, it was inevitable that the league weekend would be rain affected. Heroic work from our grounds men meant that we were largely unaffected at home... Well done Roger, Hugh and Alex!

Senior Roundup
The Men's Surrey 5th XI took the field competitively for the first time and recorded a hard fought win against Merstham. Bowling first on a Mayow Park pitch which played surprisingly well, the S5s took wickets at regular intervals with the junior section to the fore - Stan Forman Wilshaw (7-1-25-2), Dan Forman (6-1-19-4) and Henry Davey (5-1-14-2) - Merstham all out for 143. In reply, the batters looked comfortable reaching 90-1 (Tim Long 46) before some classic collapso cricket meant we rather limped over the line 7 down.
The Men's 1s also recorded a fine victory versus Cheam having been inserted under grey skies. The M1s got off to a decent start reaching 119-2 before Cheam fought back with in the middle to with four quick wickets. Some lower middle order striking got us to a competitive 191-7 off a reduced 42 overs. This quickly looked inadequate as one of Cheam openers scored a rapid 48 to get them well above the required rate. The introduction of spin soon changed the momentum and wrestled the game back in our favour, Raj Singh (8.1-1-19-6) and Lawrence Hannaford (9-0-26-3) bowled excellently to dismiss Cheam for 149.

The Men's 2s and 3s both suffered reverses to Hampton Wick Royal in games we shall gloss over and the 5s lost to Spencer despite 63 from Pharoah. Three other games were lost to the weather.
The Women's 1st XI also misfired being bowled out for 60 chasing 170 against a strong Shepperton side, Dagmara Selwyn-Kuczera taking 4-21. The Sunday 1s lost to HSBC and the result for the Sunday 2s is unknown at time of writing. The Sunday 3s beat the Energy Exiles by 54 runs having made 256-6 batting first. Runs came thanks to a stunning debut from Billy Dale (104 retired) who was well supported by Chris Hobbis (50 retired), wickets were shared around.
Yesterday, the Hawks had a thrilling tie against Dulwich - see Facebook video for the final over - and the Strikers narrowly lost to the Burbage Badgers despite 52* from Harry McNeil-Adams.
All in, we had 14 senior sides selected in the past week which must be a club record! Excellent work all those involved.

Junior Roundup
U8 and U9 league games (as well as a U11-12s friendly) went unplayed (hopefully to be re-scheduled) on Saturday due to the weather and the U13s opposition unfortunately conceded (meaning a bye through to the next round of the cup).
Of the games that were played, results weren't as good as last weekend. The Boys U12s lost narrowly to Spencer. Isaam took a hat-trick for the U15s, but in a losing cause. Stars of the show this weekend, though, were the Boys U11s who delivered a thumping 98 run victory in a 15 over cup game.
Looking forwards, next weekend the Girls U9-11s and Girls U11-13s both have their first league matches, and for the first time in the history of the older girl's squad, the team managers have a selection headache to deal with; 12 players available with 8 spots to fill.

The Fantasy SMCC Cricket League was launched last week and rain immediately played havoc with team selection. 51 teams have put just over £250 in the prize pot but there is still plenty of time to get involved and claw your way up the leaderboard. Click on the link to get involved.

We've had 10 people pay in the past week but are still only 33% of returning members have paid their fees - let's get that number up and avoid being chased! As a reminder...

Returning members - There is an "early bird" reduced rate which is available until the end of May so pay now to save yourself some cash.
New members - We recognise it can be quite a commitment to join a new club. As such, we have a taster "new member" fee of £40 (Men's) or £20 (Women's) which covers your membership for a period of one month and is discounted from the appropriate membership rate if you decide to continue. You are also eligible for the “early bird” rate throughout your first year with the club.
