🗞️Diversity and inclusion news🗞️
😨40% of brits are scared to say Black😨

Yep, a report covered by the Metro, says 40% of Brits are still afraid to say the word ‘Black’ in the workplace👀

The report by the strategy consultancy, The Unmistakables, surveyed 1,522 UK workers between 16 and 19 March 2021 and found "We are living through a state of diversity and confusion. The people that 'diversity and inclusion is meant to support are those most likely to feel excluded from the conversation.  People lack confidence in what they can and can't say in the workplace and fear the consequences of getting it wrong."👀

Given we've seen the news of companies deciding to deal with issues like this by banning discussions related to the topic, we'd love to know how your org is tackling this?🤔

You can read more of the Metro's coverage here

🎮Where are the black gamers?🎮

We read this write up in the Atlantic covering the increasing segregation in gaming👀

Yep, it's not a given that everyone can play, and certainly, not everyone can play competitively🎮

Compounded by facts such as "According to data from the New American Economy, nearly 40 percent of Black households lack personal broadband-internet access, compared with 26 percent of white households" the article gives an interesting read to an industry that before our eyes may be forging the "painful, prejudiced history that sullies the legacies of MLB, the NFL, and the NBA"😒

🧠Things that make you go hmmm🧠
🤑Where has the money gone?🤑

Around this time last year over $50bn was pledged in the wake of the BLM protests and the Killing of George Floyd. Almost a year since we ask a simple question, where has the money gone?🤔

As converted by Fortune, according to a study by Creative Investment Research, only $250 million has actually been spent or committed to a specific initiative. A large chunk of that came in a donation by Apple (Does anyone know if they have done anything outside the USA? (Last time we checked racism didn't stop at the US border)).💁🏾‍♂️

Anyways, whilst the shift in Capital may be slow and non-existing, the FT has pointed to more soft power with the likes of Coca Cola telling US Law firms within 18 months to commit to 30% of their billable time being from "diverse attorneys (wit hat least 50% being black)". If we ever needed a positive reason to take them to court this is one 🤣🤣🤣.

Our lawyers are also slaying it, Big up the L&W team who helped us on our Rise program, by leading from the front on all stuff D&I👩🏿‍⚖️

These examples do show you can demand your orgs to do more, whether it is supply chain, legal or capital. It all starts with a question though, where has the money gone?

So what?: Do you know where the money your org has committed went?

🔐Be careful what you wish for 🔐

Facebook set up an "independent oversight board" to help arbitrate over some of its toughest decisions.

The logic was, they can't regulate themselves, so they'll ask a range of people to do it for them (but nothing they say is binding, facebook funds them 6 figure salaries, and chooses them too (Independent huh😅)). Sounds like a great idea on paper after all for Mark and his team, after all whatever Facebook does badly it can be claimed on other people that aren't elected regulators🤣

Well, be careful what you wish for because after the board was asked to evaluate whether Facebook's ban of Donald Trump was correct, it came back and chucked the ball back into Facebook's court🎾

Basically, the panel said, whilst banning Trump for platform violations was fair, doing it indefinitely, with little explanation, guidelines, as it made its decisions up as it went along, wasn't good.
It recommended Facebook pay for more people to help gather better local context to help it come to such decisions in the future and to work out what its policy was on this moving forward💁🏾‍♂️(PS if you want a good news story re trump, see this)

When setting this board up, Zuck must have been hoping for some of the heat to go away from FB but the ball's back in their court, and it has 6 months to respond👀

MIT's tech review has more commentary on it here too

So what?: We wondered what we'd have to do to get a seat on this board. Sounds like a decent package🤣, but more broadly, whilst the board is probably better than nothing, we were left thinking, shouldn't this be down to elected officials🤔

🔭To the Moon🔭

We really tried to not talk crypto this week, but the self-proclaimed "Dogefather" made that impossible🤣.

Yep, Dogecoin is going to the moon (in the guise of the rocket Elon Musk is using to get there via Space X)🚀

Yep, this announcement comes off the back of this highlight anticipated Saturday Night Live episode, where he called the coin a "hustle" and sent its value plummeting ~25%. The episode also made history as Elon declared he has Asperger's😯

Back on the space theme, if Elon is getting any humans along for the ride, it might be the most inclusive form of transport ever as ESA (the European space agency) is looking for a range of Disabled folks to join its space program and become astronauts👩🏽‍🚀

So what?: The volatility of the coins is notorious and this week hasn't helped, however as space X starts to accept payments maybe there is a longer future for Doge as the currency of space.

🔐Ransomware🔐
A ransomware attack (Where someone digitally steals something you want, and demands payment or else) has halted pipeline activities for the Colonial Pipeline Co👺

You may be wondering, who are they, or what makes this special, well the fact is, that company pumps about 45% of the East Coast of the USA's liquid fuel🛢

In response to the attack, the org "proactively" (well isn't it by definition reactive🤣) took certain systems offline to contain the threat, which has temporarily halted all pipeline operations and affected their IT systems👨🏽‍💻.

The U.S. economy is very dependent on energy-pipeline infrastructure and the company called in the US government for help.

The plan B of drive it there in trucks or send the ships to different ports is hampered because of Covid reducing the number of truckers around too so this is definitely a national security threat. The thinking is it could be Cybercriinal group DarkSide who are according to Reuters, "one of many ransomware gangs extorting victims while avoiding targets in post-Soviet states."👮🏻‍♂️

If you're looking to sort out your cycber, think buying Black, Colorintech Friend Oz Alashe is CEO of UK Cybersecurity firm CybSafe🔐

This comes in a week where Google outlined how it plans to make you less reliant on passwords (and in turn, more reliant on their tech). Make your own minds up about that one🤣

So what?: This may be a big wake-up call to a range of infrastructure providers.
