For example, when watching the Rabbit in the wintertime, you will notice that they are able to run on the surface of the snow without falling through. Thus, the creation of snowshoes.

It is vital that we pass these teachings down to the next generation so that the knowledge will not be lost. With the help of from our fellow Anishinaabe and non-Anishinaabe brothers and sisters, we can achieve this. We are all related

My work with the Italian-Canadian community, in partnership with Dr. Paolo Frascà at the Department of Italian Studies at the University of Toronto, continues with our next event on Thursday May 20th at 1pm.

While the main audience for this gathering is the Italian-Canadian community, all are welcome to come and learn from Darin about the history of the Mississaugas and their understanding of the Toronto Purchase.

Description:

On May 20th, Darin Wybenga, a member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, will speak to us about the history of the Mississaugas in Southern Ontario, the Toronto Purchase, and what it means for Italian-Canadians to be "treaty people". We will begin this event with a brief history of Italian-Canadian enclaves. After Darin Wybenga's talk, we will invite you to think together with us about our relationship and responsibilities to the lands we now call home.

Together we will we deepen our knowledge about the ways in which the histories of Italian-Canadians are intertwined with those of Indigenous peoples. This event will combine elements of lecture and workshop.

Speakers:

Darin P. Wybenga is a member of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation where he works as the community’s Traditional Knowledge and Land Use Coordinator.
